Description: Abstract: In the region of Landau and Insheim, Central upper Rhine Graben, SW Germany, micro-earthquakes occur since spring 2006 due to fluid injection in the uppermost crust. These events provide important information on the structures and state of stress at depth. Here we determine fault plane solutions of the micro-earthquakes in order to understand the rupture mechanisms and stress relations at depths. Together with the relative locations of the hypocentres a prevailing NNW-SSE striking normal faulting regime is found which has a variable minor dextral strike-slip component. This result can be well explained with existing NNW-SSE striking faults which were formed during the opening of the upper Rhine Graben. These faults are reac - tivated by the fluid injection which most probably reduces the normal stress on the faults due to the fluid pressure at depth.

Description: Simple elements were subjected to repeated loads of variable ampliture, chosen in such a way that they may be regarded as approximations to the operational loads (gust and maneuver) experienced by an airplane. The effect of varying some parameters was investigated briefly. Some discussion is given of the question whether a design according to current (1938 German) requirements for static strength is adequate from the fatigue point of view, and existing requirements on fatigue strength are compared,

Description: Fiber/matrix composite laminates developed to protect military land vehicles against projectiles and spacecraft against impacts by micrometeroids. Although types, sizes, and velocities of expected incident objects differ between terrestrial and outer-space cases, general protection problems and solutions exhibit some common features. Configurations of fibers and matrices optimized with respect to protection, bulk, and weight, to obtain shield that breaks rapidly moving incident object into harmless smaller, more-slowly-moving pieces, containing debris, vaporizes debris, and/or otherwise absorbs kinetic energy of object to prevent harm to vehicle and occupants.

Description: A modicum of progress has been made in an effort to exploit single-walled carbon nanotubes as fibers in epoxy-matrix/fiber composite materials. Two main obstacles to such use of carbon nanotubes are the following: (1) bare nanotubes are not soluble in epoxy resins and so they tend to agglomerate instead of becoming dispersed as desired; and (2) because of lack of affinity between nanotubes and epoxy matrices, there is insufficient transfer of mechanical loads between the nanotubes and the matrices. Part of the effort reported here was oriented toward (1) functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes with methyl methacrylate (MMA) to increase their dispersability in epoxy resins and increase transfer of mechanical loads and (2) ultrasonic dispersion of the functionalized nanotubes in tetrahydrofuran, which was used as an auxiliary solvent to aid in dispersing the functionalized nanotubes into a epoxy resin. In another part of this effort, poly(styrene sulfonic acid) was used as the dispersant and water as the auxiliary solvent. In one experiment, the strength of composite of epoxy with MMA-functionalized-nanotubes was found to be 29 percent greater than that of a similar composite of epoxy with the same proportion of untreated nanotubes.

Description: In the calculation of the dimensions of modern machines and building constructions, account is taken of the frequency of the occurrence of the anticipated loads. It is generally assumed that these loads will be repeated an infinite number, or at any rate some millions, of times during the total working life of the construction, When calculating the dimensions of the structural parts of aircraft, on the contrary, a consideration only of those frequencies in the appearance of the loads which actually come into play in the various states of stress is allowable. This is because in aircraft construction it is absolutely essential not only to ensure adequate structural strength but also to keep down the structural weight to the lowest possible limit, Strength tests in which this requirement is directly taken into account have recently been carried out by the DVL Material Strength Department.
