Notizen: A unified approach is presented for the static and transient dynamic linear and geometrically nonlinear analysis of Mindlin plates including initial imperfections. The effects of transverse shear deformation and rotatory inertia are automatically taken into account. A finite element idealization is adopted and the quadratic Lagrangian Mindlin plate element is used together with selective integration. Several numerical examples are presented and compared with results from other sources.

Notizen: The application of the Zienkiewicz and Zhu error estimator to three-dimensional faceted shells presents some difficulties which arise from the lack of C1 continuity of the geometry. This paper presents a method to circumvent such difficulties based on the existence of a mapping from a flat reference configuration to the actual shell. This mapping is used not only to enable meshes to be generated in a two-dimensional space, but also to define a stress measure - similar to the first Piola-Kirchhoff stress used in large deformation mechanics - which can be consistently smoothed over the reference configuration. A preliminary investigation of the method is provided by three simple examples.

Notizen: The dynamics of shallow water has been studied and an algorithm for this dynamics has been developed. Results have been obtained with data of the Venice lagoon using a model made expressively by a semi-implicit method based on a finite element method in space. Comparison has been made between field data and the results of the simulation. Very good agreement is shown over a long period of simulation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Beschreibung: Bacteria react to adverse environmental stimuli by clustering into organized communities called biofilms. A remarkably sophisticated control system based on the dinucleotide 3'–5' cyclic diguanylic acid (c-di-GMP) is involved in deciding whether to form or abandon biofilms. The ability of c-di-GMP to form self-intercalated dimers is also thought to play a role in this complex regulation. A great advantage in the quest of elucidating the catalytic properties of the enzymes involved in c-di-GMP turnover (diguanylate cyclases and phosphodiesterases) would come from the availability of an experimental approach for in vitro quantification of c-di-GMP in real-time. Here, we show that c-di-GMP can be detected and quantified by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy in the low micromolar range. The method is based on the selective ability of manganese ions to induce formation of the intercalated dimer of the c-di-GMP dinucleotide in solution, which displays an intense sigmoidal CD spectrum in the near-ultraviolet region. This characteristic spectrum originates from the stacking interaction of the four mutually intercalated guanines, as it is absent in the other cyclic dinucleotide 3'–5' cyclic adenilic acid (c-di-AMP). Thus, near-ultraviolet CD can be used to effectively quantify in real-time the activity of diguanylate cyclases and phosphodiesterases in solution.
