    Beschreibung: From the Preface: Unfortunately, a guide like this one does not happen simply. It is the product of polite requests (at first polite, anyway) from colleagues, of mutual nagging, and of wives with persistant memories. What we are attempting to achieve with this contribution is a consolidation of many years of personal experience with squid into a source of practical information hopefully useful to the increasing number of people working with the squid. One does not undertake the task of preparing such a guide for a limited audience with unreserved enthusiasm. It always seems the same amount of work could produce something for a larger audience and therefore, hopefully, of greater significance. On the other hand when the hours and days spent on developing handling procedures, techniques, and "tricks of the squid trade" are considered it seems untenable not to pass this otherwise unpublishable data on in hope of saving others like pain and time. Therefore, what we have attempted to do is informally put together information that should prove useful to people interested in all aspects of squid biology. In this way we hope to make the laboratory utilization of the squid more efficient not only from the standpoint of the investigator and the collector but also for the future of the species Loligo pealei.

    Notizen: Abstract Twenty-four healthy normal volunteers were given 40 mEq of three oral formulations of K+ as potassium chloride in a three-way Latin square design. Pharmacokinetic characteristics of potassium disposition were determined using urinary excretion data. Potassium was absorbed almost instantaneously from the 10% (w/v) solution, while a slow first-order absorption could explain the slow release of potassium from Slow-K and the new slow-release tablet. A biphasic elimination of potassium observed during the first 24 hr of urinary excretion suggested the body's adaptive process of changes in rates of elimination of potassium to maintain homeostasis. There was no significant difference (P = 0.25) in total recoveries of potassium in urine during 48 hr of urinary collection among the three formulations (mean ± SE: solution, 35 ± 7.1 mEq; Slow-K, 38.1 ± 7.8 mEq; and new formulations, 33.5 ± 6.8 mEq). An increased excretion of sodium was observed and correlated with increased potassium excretion following oral potassium administration which could not be explained by changes in urine flow rate. The clinical significance of such an increase in natriuresis is yet to be determined.

    Notizen: In this work, we show the implementation of two explicit three-dimensional finite-difference beam propagation methods (BPM) on two different parallel computers, namely a transputer array and a Connection Machine (CM). To assess the performance of using parallel computers, serial computer codes of the two methods have ben implemented and a comparison between the speed of the serial and paralledl codes has been made. Large gains in the speed of the paralled FD-BPMs has been obtained compared to the serial implementations. In addition, a comparison between the performance of the transputer array and the CM in executing the two FD-BPMs has been discussed. Finally, to assess and compare the two methods, three different rib waveguides and three different directional couplers have been analysed and the results compared with published results.

    Beschreibung: "Close Call Action Log Form" ("CCALF") is the name of both a computer program and a Web-based service provided by the program for creating an enhanced database of close calls (in the colloquial sense of mishaps that were avoided by small margins) assigned to the Center Operations Directorate (COD) at Johnson Space Center. CCALF provides a single facility for on-line collaborative review of close calls. Through CCALF, managers can delegate responses to employees. CCALF utilizes a pre-existing e-mail system to notify managers that there are close calls to review, but eliminates the need for the prior practices of passing multiple e-mail messages around the COD, then collecting and consolidating them into final responses: CCALF now collects comments from all responders for incorporation into reports that it generates. Also, whereas it was previously necessary to manually calculate metrics (e.g., numbers of maintenance-work orders necessitated by close calls) for inclusion in the reports, CCALF now computes the metrics, summarizes them, and displays them in graphical form. The reports and all pertinent information used to generate the reports are logged, tracked, and retained by CCALF for historical purposes.
