    Notes: Nuclear magnetic relaxation times have been studied in some polymer liquids and solutions. The nonexponential decay of the transverse magnetization has been ascribed to the distribution of molecular weights. The use of such measurements as a means of determining average molecular weights and distributions is discussed. A preliminary application of this use is made for polyethylene. The implications of nuclear magnetic relaxation measurements are discussed in terms of molecular motional processes of the polymer chains.

    Notes: Various self-diffusion and nuclear relaxation experiments are reported for a polyisobutylene of rather low molecular weight, in bulk and in solution. In the bulk, the self-diffusion coefficient obeys the Arrhenius relation, yielding an activation energy of 5.5 kcal./mole. In solution the activation energies are lower, approaching the value for the solvent at low concentration. The self-diffusion coefficient of the polymer at infinite dilution is 1.2 × 10-5 cm.2/sec. in CS2 and 0.44 × 10-5 cm.2/sec. in CCl4. The ratio is close to the inverse ratio of the solvent viscosities. Measurements of self-diffusion of the solvent have been made for cyclohexane in polyisobutylene. A simple interpretation of the data in terms of Stokes-Einstein models yields molecular dimensions which are too small by a factor of two or three.

    Description: The solar arrays on Navstars 1 to 6 have been limiting the electrical power capabilities in the extended life (beyond the 5 year design life). The departure from predicted performance consists of an extra 2.5 percent per year degradation beyond the radiation model estimates. This degradation is unusual in showing a linear rather than exponential decay with time. The performance of the arrays on these satellites has been examined in order to predict future behavior and to make refined projections on the Navstar 7 to 11 solar arrays. Evidence obtained from flight experiments on Navstar 5 and 6, and from laboratory experiments, suggests that contamination of the solar arrays while on orbit may be responsible. The evidence for photo-induced contamination of spacecraft surfaces is presented, and the effect on solar array output in the case of the GPS satellites is shown to be consistent with the observed anomalies.

    Description: The PASP-Plus (Photovoltaic Array Space Power Plus Diagnostics) program is a photovoltaic experiment which is flying on the Air Force satellite APEX (Advanced Photovoltaic and Electronics Experiments). The satellite was launched on August 3, 1994 with a Pegasus low-cost launch vehicle. There are two other small experiments on APEX, however PASP-Plus is the largest, uses the most power, and accounts for the largest portion of the data requirements. The satellite is in an elliptical orbit with an apogee of 2552 km and a perigee of 363 km. The inclination is 70 degrees. The PASP-Plus experiment consists of twelve photovoltaic panels containing a total of sixteen separate cell modules. Two of the modules are concentrator modules, while the rest are planar. There are several different solar cell types flying on PASP-Plus including silicon, GaAs on germanium substrates, InP, amorphous silicon, and three multi-bandgap cells. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the data from the first year of the PASP-Plus flight. Cell performance and module thermal performance will be discussed as well as other relevant data.
