    Notes: Use of porous glass with a broad pore-size distribution as a column packing for gel permeation chromatography has been investigated. The porous glass is readily available, and columns are packed easily and have excellent mechanical stability. Separations of polystyrene over molecular weight ranges of 500-2,000,000 have been obtained. Porous glass thus appears to be a useful packing material for gel permeation chromatography.

    Notes: Sensitive refractive index measurements on solutions have indicated that the narrow molecular weight polystyrene samples prepared by the Mellon Institute method exhibit a small systematic molecular weight-refractive index dependence up to 300,000 and higher. This upper limit is higher than had previously been suggested. Sensible consistency is generally assumed above a few thousand molecular weight. The effect on this molecular weight-refractive index dependence on gel permeation chromatography and light-scattering molecular weight measurements on polystyrene standards is illustrated.

    Notes: This study was conducted to investigate some fundamental fatigue testing variables as they apply to the response characteristics of acrylic bone cement. Cyclic loading under load control was conducted at frequencies of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 Hz in air at room temperature. At a tensile stress range of 0.3-20.0 MPa the fatigue life increased linearly with logarithmic frequency. The effect of conditioning and testing in saline at both room temperature and 37°C at similar stress levels and a frequency of 10 Hz were also examined. When compared to dry testing at room temperature, testing in saline at 37°C resulted in a reduction in fatigue life while testing in saline at room temperature produced an increase in fatigue life. Of a number of statistical distributions considered, the Weibull was found to be the most appropriate in documenting the findings of this investigation. A companion fractographic investigation of the failure surfaces demonstrated distinct regions of crack growth and fast fracture.

    Notes: 1- and 2-Chloroanthracenes have been copolymerized with butadiene in the Mutual recipe and in the Mutual recipe with some added benzene. Using charging ratios of 90 parts of butadiene and 10 parts of chloroanthracene in the absence of benzene, the incorporation of the 1 isomer at 62% conversion is 16.9% and the incorporation of the 2 isomer at 80% conversion is 7.3%. In the presence of added benzene (5 ml. to 84 g. charge) the incorporation of the 1 isomer is 21.2% at 39% conversion and the incorporation of the 2 isomer is 9.4% at 53% conversion. The anthracene derivative is incorporated in the polymer chain through the meso positions.

    Notes: Preparation of a carboxylic ion-exchange membrane by grafting poly(acrylic acid) onto cellophane is described. This membrane filters appreciable fractions of dissolved salt from solutions 1M and less in NaCl; flow rates through the membrane at 2500 psi are 0.5 cm./hr. and higher. Comparison is made of salt rejection properties and flow rates with a film of cellulose acetate in which rejection does not depend on fixed ionizable groups. Rejections of salts having ions of different charges are presented. Experimental apparatus for hyperfiltration is described.

    Notes: The aquarium test is a proven means of obtaining nonidial performance property data for commercial blasting agents. Optical data on the detonation velocity, shock wave in water, and expansion rate of the pipe enclosing the detonation products (in combination with the equilibrium thermodynamic chemistry code BKW) give the C-J state and degree of chemical reaction at the detonation front, as well as information on additional chemical reaction that occurs as the detonation products expand. Specific explosive systems that are studied are ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixture (ANFO), aluminized ANFO, flaked trinitrotoluene (TNT), and several other commercial products in 10-cm-diam and 20-cm-diam pipes of Plexiglas and clay. Experimental shock pressure data are obtained with lithium niobate transducers placed in the water surrounding the explosive charge. These data show that the addition of ∼ 100-μm aluminum particles to ANFO significantly increases the initial peak shock pressure delivered to the surrounding medium. Peak shock pressures in the water, calculated from the shock-wave orientation, are also useful in comparing performance properties of various commercial explosives.

    Description: Extended charge-discharge cycling of this electrochemical storage system at 65 C was performed on 14.5 sq cm single cells and a four cell, 867 sq cm bipolar stack. Both the anolyte and catholyte reactant fluids contained 1 molar concentrations of iron and chromium chlorides in hydrochloric acid and were separated by a low-selectivity, cation-exchange membrane. The effect of cycling on the chromium electrode and the cation-exchange membrane was determined. Bismuth and bismuth-lead catalyzed chromium electrodes and a radiation-grafted polyethylene membrane were evaluated by cycling between 5 and 85 percent state-of-charge at 80 mA/sq cm and by periodic charge-discharge polarization measurements to 140 mA/sq cm. Gradual performance losses were observed during cycling but were recoverable by completely discharging the system. Good scale-up to the 867 sq cm stack was achieved. The only difference appeared to be an unexplained resistive-type loss which resulted in a 75 percent W-hr efficiency (at 80 mA/sq cm versus 81 percent for the 14.5 sq cm cell). A new rebalance cell was developed to maintain reactant ionic balance. The cell successfully reduced ferric ions in the iron reactant stream to ferrous ions while chloride ions were oxidized to chlorine gas.

    Description: Geo-orbital systems of the near future will require more sophisticated electronic and electromechanical monitoring and control systems than current satellite systems with an emphasis in the design on the electronic density and autonomy of the subsystem components. Results of a project to develop, design, and implement a proof-of-concept sensor system for space applications, with hybrids forming the active subsystem components are described. The design of the solar power hybrid sensor modules is discussed. Module construction and function are described. These modules combined low power CMOS electronics, GaAs solar cells, a crystal oscillatory standard UART data formatting, and a bidirectional optical data link into a single 1.25 x 1.25 x 0.25 inch hybrid package which has no need for electrical input or output. Several modules were built and tested. Applications of such a system for future space missions are also discussed.

    Description: Field strength measurements on a single row of panels indicates that the operational mode of the array as configured presents no radiated EMI problems. Only one relatively significant frequency band near 200 kHz showed any degree of intensity (9 muV/m including a background level of 5 muV/m). The level was measured very near the array (at 20 ft distance) while Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations limit spurious emissions to 15 muV/m at 1,000 ft. No field strength readings could be obtained even at 35 ft distant.
