    Description: Transfer matrices are developed which permit analysis and computer evaluation of certain series type microwave antenna circuits associated with an L-Band microwave radiometer (LBMR) under investigation at Goddard Space Flight Center. This radiometer is one of several diverse instrument designs to be used for the determination of soil moisture, sea state, salinity, and temperature data. Four port matrix notation is used throughout for the evaluation of LBMR circuits with mismatched couplers and lossy transmission lines. Matrix parameters in examples are predicted on an impedance analysis and an assumption of an array aperture distribution. The notation presented is easily adapted to longer and more varied chains of matrices, and to matrices of larger dimension.

    Description: An analytical/numerical approach to identifying and correcting the aberrations introduced by a general displacement of the feed from the focal point of a single offset paraboloid antenna used in deployable radiometer systems is developed. A 15 meter reflector with 18 meter focal length is assumed for the analysis, which considers far field radiation pattern quality, focal region fields, and aberrations appearing in the aperture plane. The latter are obtained by ray tracing in the transmit mode and are expressed in terms of optical notation. Attention is given to the physical restraints imposed on corrective elements by real microwave systems and to the intermediate near field aspects of the problem in three dimensions. The subject of wave fronts and caustics in the receive mode is introduced for comparative purposes. Several specific examples are given for aberration reduction at eight beamwidths of scan at a frequency of 1.414 GHz.

    Description: A switchable beamwidth antenna includes a concave parabolic main reflecting dish which has a central circular region and a surrounding coaxial annular region. A feed means selectively excites only the central region of the main dish via a truncated subreflector for wide beamwidth or substantially the entire main dish for narrow beamwidth. In one embodiment, the feed means comprises a truncated concave ellipsoid subreflector and separate feed terminations located at two foci of the ellipsoid. One feed termination directly views all of the main dish while the other feed termination, exciting the main dish via the subreflector, excites only the central region because of the subreflector truncation. In the another embodiment, the feed means comprises one feed termination and a convex hyperboloid subreflector via which the feed excites the main dish.

    Description: A switchable beamwidth monopulse method and system are described. An antenna comprising a curved reflector and a first set of monopulse feeds positioned in the effective region of the airy disc of the antenna includes a second set of monopulse feeds. The second set of monopulse feeds is positioned outside the airy disc in the region of first bright airy ring. In narrow beamwidth monopulse operation, monopulse sum and difference channel patterns are obtained from the first set of feeds within the airy disc. In wide beamwidth monopulse operation, the difference channel pattern is obtained from the second set of feeds in the airy ring; the sum channel pattern is obtained by attenuation and phase shifting the sum channel signal obtained from the first set of feeds, and adding the resultant to the sum channel signal obtained from the second set of feeds. In a simplified form of the invention, the difference channel patterns for both narrow and wide beamwidth mode operation are obtained from the second set of feeds, while the sum channel patterns are obtained as described above.

    Description: This document discusses the determination of caustic surfaces in terms of rays, reflectors, and wavefronts. Analytical caustics are obtained as a family of lines, a set of points, and several types of equations for geometries encountered in optics and microwave applications. Standard methods of differential geometry are applied under different approaches: directly to reflector surfaces, and alternatively, to wavefronts, to obtain analytical caustics of two sheets or branches. Gauss/Seidel aberrations are introduced into the wavefront approach, forcing the retention of all three coefficients of both the first- and the second-fundamental forms of differential geometry. An existing method for obtaining caustic surfaces through exploitation of the singularities in flux density is examined, and several constant-intensity contour maps are developed using only the intrinsic Gaussian, mean, and normal curvatures of the reflector. Numerous references are provided for extending the material of the present document to the morphologies of caustics and their associated diffraction patterns.

    Description: Method and apparatus for determining the focal axis of an asymmetrical antenna such as an offset paraboloid reflector whose physical rim is not coincident with the boundary of the electrical aperture but whose focal point is known is provided. A transmitting feed horn array consisting of at least two feed horn elements is positioned asymmetrically on either side of an estimated focal axis which is generally inclined with respect to the boresight axis of the antenna. The feed horn array is aligned with the estimated focal axis so that the phase centers (CP sub 1, CP sub 2) of the two feed horn elements are located on a common line running through the focal point (F) orthogonally with respect to the estimated focal axis.
