Description: The design and performance of a liquid-He-cooled spectrometer being developed for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) to study FIR lines originating in the interstellar medium are discussed. Currently, the spectrometer contains six Ge:Ga photoconductor detectors mounted in integrating cavities and cooled to about 3 K; the collimator focal plane has space for 39 such detectors. The instrument achieves a maximum resolving power of 6000 by means of a 45-cm long echelle grating and is optically capable of operating in the spectral range 25-300 microns. A laboratory spectrum of water vapor, an atmospheric water absorption feature measured from the KAO with Mars as a source, and the forbidden O(2+) emission from W51-IRS1 are shown.

Description: In the past few years, NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) has made it possible to conduct pioneering observations of far infrared lines from astronomical sources. Such observations, in the case of wavelengths in the approximate range from 20 to 350 microns, cannot be performed from ground-based sites, because of telluric water absorption effects. Lines in the considered range provide information about the interstellar gas in molecular, neutral atomic, and ionized form of occurrence. The present paper provides a description of the development of the cryogenic optical system of a spectrometer designed to exploit the potential of the KAO for observing the far infrared lines. Attention is given to design goals and considerations, details of optical design, the fabrication of the optical system, the cryostat, and performance.

Description: Seven gallium doped germanium (Ge:Ga) photoconductive infrared detectors were fabricated and mounted in integrating cavities. In addition, a cold preamplifier package consisting of J230 junction field effect transistors (JFETs) was produced. Tests of the system under low photon background conditions indicated that sensitivity was limited by the Johnson noise of the load resistor. The detectors were mounted in the Ames cooled grating spectrometer, and flown on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Good quality astronomical data were obtained during the flight of 7 July 1983.

Description: A 3He cryostat which was constructed to cool a germanium bolometer for use as an infrared detector at submillimeter wavelength is discussed. The system had better sensitivity than any other existing system for these wavelengths; the system could be improved if better optical coupling could be achieved between the bolometer and the incoming photon stream. Considerable effort was expended to improve this coupling. Even the best results however, fell short of an ideal system by a factor of nearly 5 in coupling efficiency.

Description: A new, 1-mm-continuum, bolometer detector system has been constructed employing internal adsorption pumping of He-3 to reach an operating temperature close to 0.4 K. The system spectral bandwidth is 800 to 1200 microns. Although the system was originally designed to be used on the 5-m Hale telescope, it has also been successfully used on the 4-m Anglo-Australian telescope and on the 10-m dish at Owens Valley, California. At the 5-m Hale telescope, the system has a full width-half maximum (FWHM) beam size of 55 sec and an instantaneous noise-equivalent flux density of 6 Jy/square root of (Hz)/ in good weather.

Description: A liquid-helium-cooled grating spectrometer has been developed for low-resolution far-infrared spectrometric measurements of astronomical sources conducted by the 30-cm NASA Lear Jet telescope. Simple MOSFET coupled transimpedance preamplifiers were adopted for the spectrometer design. The infrared spectrometer has resolving powers from 10 to 150 over the wavelength range from 45 to 115 microns.

Description: For cryogenically-cooled infrared instruments and telescopes employed in space, reliable and predictable motor operations at 4 K in vacuum are in most cases necessary. For the Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF), stepper motors may be employed in a number of applications. A test facility was designed and built for measuring stepper motor positional repeatability, in vacuum, over a temperature range from ambient to liquid helium temperature. Tests regarding positional repeatability were conducted at different motor speeds, directions of motor rotation, step sizes, and power conditions. In addition, tests were performed with respect to the ability of the motor to remain in a position with no power applied to the motor.

Description: The spiking and memory behavior of a number of Ge:Ga detectors was studied. The detectors were manufactured at a number of locations using several different contacting techniques. Two detectors manufactured for the IRAS program by Rockwell International were studied more extensively than the others. These detectors IRD 1981 and IRD 1982 were 'witness sample' detectors for the IRAS bands 4 and 3, respectively. During the testing period both the apparatus and the test procedures were changed numerous times. At each change consistency checks were made. The data are believed to be internally consistent from end to end.
