Description: A calibration test is described that was performed to supplement the normal calibration of the 188 pressure transducers used in the Tip Aerodynamics and Acoustics Test. This calibration led to the identification of 15 transducers which had a slope change of greater than 7% from the initial calibration. The calibration procedure is described and the results presented. The effect of the slope changes on the pressure distributions are described, followed by a method to compensate for these changes.

Description: The influence of the Mott cross section in producing a departure from a Z-sq dependence in the Heavy Nuclei Experiment instrument on board the HEAO-3 satellite is examined, along with the related problem of secondary electron energy transport through the instrument. A Monte Carlo method of electron transport and a modification of the Laulainen and Bichsel (1972) method were used to calculate energy deposition in the chamber, and corrections to the Cerenkov counter response were made. A maximum correction of a change of Z values of a -4 at Z equals 78 was found, and further calculations to determine the Mott cross sections for Z between 26-50 are indicated.

Description: Work performed during this effort was limited to two primary areas of technical concern: optical design optimization, and sensor selection. An optical system concept was established, and various system components were evaluated through experimental test sequences. Photodetectors were investigated for the applicability in meeting OPGT requirements as constrained by the photometry/polarimetry team directives. The most promising (gallium arsenide PMT) was further experimentally tested to ascertain its behavior with respect to anticipated environmental conditions. Results of testing and summary of the preceding tradeoff study effort are presented.

Description: The imaging photopolarimeter aboard the Pioneer 10 spacecraft en route to the vicinity of Jupiter is described. This instrument is capable of moderate resolution spin-scan imaging and high precision polarimetric and photometric mapping of Jupiter in red and blue light. The field of view can be selectively changed from 0.50 mrad square to 40 mrad square to accommodate resolution and radiance combinations ranging from the zodiacal background to that of Jupiter. Optical materials were chosen to survive, with minimum degradation, the rigors of a nearly 2-year journey to Jupiter including transit through the Jovian trapped radiation belts. The optics are described in detail, and the operational system is outlined. The procedures for preflight and in-flight calibration are described, and some performance characteristics and preliminary flight results are presented.

Description: A JACEE-3 instrument was flown on a balloon in June 1982 for 6.1 sq m sr hr exposure at an average atmospheric depth of 5 gm/sq cm in order to study the cosmic ray spectra, composition, and interactions above 1 TeV. The nucleus-nucleus interactions were studied above 20 GeV/amu from z = 6 to z = 26. The electronic counters contained gas Cerenkov structures with a 1.0-cm thick lead glass and a 1.27-cm thick Teflon radiator. A comparison to the instrument prototype is made. Based on the electronic counter event data, the finding efficiency of the hodoscope is noted to be near 100 percent for z greater than or equal to 22. A comparison is made between the hodoscope-predicted position and track found at P3 in an emulsion chamber.
