Description:
Description:
The most conspicuous marine species of the keys north of the Gulf of Batabano (southwestern shelf of Cuba) were inventoried. Fifteen stations were established including mangrove swamps in the keys and surrounding seagrass beds. Samples were collected by diving with light equipment; direct (qualitative visual census and taking pictures) and indirect methods (collection of biotic and abiotic substrates) were used. Additionally, dense seagrass beds found away from the keys were tracked using an Otter dredger. As a result of this study, 211 species were inventoried: 62 macroalgae, 5 phanerogams, 27 sponges, 14 cnidarians, 53 mollusks, 1 crustacean, 9 echinoderms, 2 ascidians, and 38 fish. This area is recommended to be included within the National Protected Area System of Cuba, due to the flora and fauna values it has, as well as for the presence of Prunum caneli, marine gastropod endemic to the Gulf of Batabano.
