Notes: The polymerization of 3,3″-dialkylterthiophenes overcomes the lack of regiospecificity associated (to some extent) with all the polymerization methods in use, thus allowing the preparation of perfectly regioregular polymers endowed with enhanced electrical and optical properties. Moreover, the larger spacing of the alkyl chains achieved with the insertion of an unsubstituted thiophene unit confers to such regioregular polymers an extraordinary doping stability. Two regiochemically defined alkoxy-substituted terthiophenes were also polymerized and the effects of the effects of the presence and position of the alkoxy group on the polymerization reaction and on the polymer properties are discussed. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The aggregative stability of natural rubber (NR) latex stabilized by nonionic, fatty alcohol ethylene oxide condensate surfactant (Verol S-15) was studied in the presence of formic acid. Natural rubber latex having an additional 3-5 phr surfactant is stable at pH 2 when acidified by formic acid and can be successfully subjected to the subsequent in situ epoxidation. Using a large ratio of H2O2 to isoprene unit (0.4-4.0 M/M) and large excess of H2O2 to HCOOH (3-13 M/M) in reaction, the in situ epoxidation can be performed with reaction mixture having dry rubber content up to 35-37% at room temperature or up to 28% at 50°C. This reaction leads to products of large range of epoxide contents and characterized by absence of side-ring opening groups, proved by IR and 1H-NMR analysis. By infrared spectroscopy it was demonstrated a good correlation between the absorbances of the residual double bonds and of the epoxide groups versus the epoxide content in the range from 0 to approx. 60 mol % level. The solubility and gel content were studied in various solvents, demonstrating that epoxidation leads to increasing gel content at high epoxide levels and to enhancing sensitivity of the product toward polar solvents. By GPC, it was shown for the soluble fraction that epoxidation was accompanied by reducing the molecular weight and by change of the MWD compared with the original NR.

Notes: The blends of very high molecular weight high-density polyethylene (VHMW-HDPE) or ultrahigh molecular weight high-denisity polyethylene (UHMW-HDPE) and low-density polyethylene with normal molecular weight (LDPE) in equal or prevailing concentrations of the first component have excellent mechanical properties but very high viscosity in a molten state. The present investigations are a continuation of the fact, established by us for the first time, that the addition of a third polymer, isotactic polypropylene (I-PP), at optimal low concentrations increases the melt flowability of these systems without considerable deterioration of their very good mechanical properties in the solid semicrystalline state. The comparison between the thermomechanical behavior and the sorption in organic media of the systems leads to the supposition that an uninterrupted physical network from the VHMW-HDPE has been formed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The in situ epoxidation of natural rubber latex was successfully performed in chain-scissoring conditions. The chain-scissoring process could be carried out simultaneously or successively to the epoxidation, to a determined extent. The rate and the degree of epoxidation depend on temperature, pH, and H2O2/isoprene units ratio. The chain-scissoring reaction leads to a limited intrinsic viscosity range and, at pH 2-3, it was practically completed in 24-40 h. The gel content of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) products are markedly reduced in the presence of reducing agent. Infrared spectra of ENR, thus prepared, are characterized by the presence of a typical weak band at 1550 cm-1, in addition to the other characteristic bands for normal ENR. At low pH and long-lasting reaction, the epoxide ring undergoes a ring-opening process, resulting in the formation of new OH, CO, ether groups, and slightly increased gel content. The Huggins constant, for a typical series of ENR obtained in redox conditions, was determined. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: This paper describes an investigation of the influence of radiation on the creep of polyethylene in tension and compression. The influence of five radiation doses and four stress levels were considered in this study. The tests were conducted for periods of 1000 hr. Even for small doses of radiation, it was found that the creep resistance of the material was increased. However, it should be noted that with decrease in creep deformations, the time to rupture for a given stress will very likely be decreased. In addition, the short-time properties may be adversely influenced by radiation. It is therefore necessary to select the optimum radiation dose based upon a consideration of all the properties.

Notes: In this study, the influence of various nuclear radiation doses on the short-time tension, compression, bending and pure shear (torsion) stress-strain properties of polyethylene was investigated. In interpreting the test results, an attempt was made to determine the optimum radiation dose for each of the properties evaluated. In addition to the nominal tension and compression properties, the true stress-strain properties were determined. Nominal properties in bending and torsion were also found. For all four types of stress, the influence of radiation was found using fur different doses of radiation. A second part of this paper deals with the theoretical prediction of bending-curvature and torque-twist relations from true stress-strain curves in tension and compression. A comparison of the predicted and actual relations for the various radiation doses considered shows good agreement between actual and predicted values.

Notes: Temperature changes of infrared spectra of poly(oxymethylene) samples in the hexagonal crystalline form were measured; in the nascent state, these samples contained either long (type A) or short (type B) sequences of monomeric units in the G conformation. It was found that up to the temperature of “solid crystal-plastic crystal” transition, the original structure of both types remains essentially unchanged. Only in the melt the original structure is completely destroyed. The composition of the melt is the same for both cases.

Notes: IR spectra of hexagonal poly(oxymethylene) samples prepared by various polymerization procedures have been studied. The samples were further modified by pressure and by milling in liquid nitrogen. It was found that the considerable differences observed in IR spectra in the range 900-1250 cm-1 are caused by irregularities of the G conformation of the polymer chain. The regularity of the G conformational structure increases by pressing and milling.
