Notes: This paper describes the morphology of the free swimming Pipa larvae, compares them with Xenopus, Hymenochirus, and to some extent, Rhinophrynus larvae, and presents a morphological diagnosis of pipid larvae.Pipa and Xenopus have very similar chondrocrania. Hymenochirus is superficially different but has the same diagnostic features. The differences appear related to its small size and predatory habitus. Other aspects of anatomy, especially the filter apparatus are very different in each genus. The filter apparatus of Pipa is somewhat reduced and seems modified for the retention of relatively large (20+microns) particles. Similar adaptations may have been annectant to predations in Hymenochirus, which lacks a filter apparatus. However, varying states of seven character complexes, which cut across the varying ecology, show that there are two basic pipid lineages, each currently confined to Africa or South America, respectively. Recent finds of fossil South American Xenopus indicate that these two lineages separated before the continents did. This does not warrant the recognition of two subfamilies because Xenopus and Hymenochirus are too different. Pseudhymenochirus is not an intermediate between them; it is a primitive Hymenochirus.Eight character states separate pipid and rhynophrynid larvae.

Notes: The larval chondrocranium of the pelobatoid anuran Pelodytes punctatus was studied, using Alcian blue-alizarin stained and cleared whole preparations, serial sections, and gross dissections. This beaked tadpole is an unspecialized pond dweller and its chondrocranium closely resembles those of other ecologically similar tadpoles of diverse systematic relationships. Detailed analysis, however, shows many differences among the chondrocrania of anuran larvae. Among other features, these include the configurations of suprarostrals, fronto-parietal fenestrae, palatoquadrate suspensoria, the ligamentum or cartilago tectum of the muscular process of the quadrate and the circumoral ligaments. The lateral circumoral ligament permits differentiation of beaked discoglossoidean and ranoidean larvae. Microhyloids conform to the ranoidean pattern in this feature. Pipoids either lack it or seem to conform to the discoglossoidean pattern. Use of these larval features as key characters enables assignment of Pelodytes to an uncertain position among pelobatoid frogs. This is totally congruent with previous assignments based on adult features and is used to support the hypothesis that anuran phylogenies based on larval characters will closely resemble, in major features at least, those based solely on adult characters.

Notes: This work employs a Fortran program to simulate rotary shadowing, that is, metal evaporation deposits in which the substrate is rotating during the deposition process. The results are compared with computer simulations of unidirectional shadowing published in a previous paper. (See Colquhoun et al., 1985). The analysis shows that a substantial improvement in resolution is possible with rotary shadowing. The improved information retrieval amounts to ∼15% with a shadow angle of 33° and ∼37% with a shadow angle of 8°. Unidirectional shadowing results in a grain linearity; the computer simulations show that this undesirable effect is eliminated by the rotary process. These advantages of rotary shadowing are discussed along with the more straight forward interpretability of the rotary shadowed images. These advantages are weighed against the higher contrast generated by the unidirectional shadowing process.

Notes: This paper addresses the question of what is the very best deposition that can be achieved by metal evaporation shadowing. It deals, therefore, with the resolution attainable in metal shadowed specimens. The analysis disregards interatomic attractions (nucleation, crystallite formation, decoration) and generates depositions solely on the basis of probabilities of vacant, single, and multiple atom landings at different points on a substrate. The treatment starts by showing that random number generation can be used to simulate reasonably the evaporation of metal atoms from a shadowing source and their deposit on a substrate. A Fortran program tabulates and displays these simulated atom landings. The analysis shows that one can never expect to obtain a perfectly uniform deposit; some areas will always be heavily filled while others will be lightly filled or vacant. Resolution is thereby limited. The analysis shows how a deposit becomes more uniform as the number of atoms deposited increases. It predicts optimal amounts of deposition for various shadowing angles. The analysis also provides a rationale for the way in which deposition grain coarsens and resolution worsens as the angle of shadow is made more steep.Computer-generated “ideal” depositions are compared with real shadow grains achieved under equivalent experimental conditions. The simulations are also compared with deposits achieved by novel shadowing methods. Ways to improved metal evaporation technique are suggested by the analysis and these are discussed.
