    Notes: An automated collagen solubilizing apparatus that maintains constant electrolytic conditions during solubilization is described. It was used in solubilization of 6.95% of a calfskin corium as monomeric collagen in citrate buffer at pH 3.44 and ionic strength of 0.44 and a temperature of 8°C. It is shown that this is the limit of solubilization for undenatured collagen in this buffer.

    Notes: Polyurethanes (PU) with suitable soft segments have been found to be good blood-compatible polymers and have attracted much attention recently. In this study, various molar amounts of 4,4′-methylene bisphenyl isocyanate reacted with poly(tetramethylene oxide) were synthesized to explore the optimal ratio of hard/soft segments for cell attachment and proliferation in in vitro systems. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis were used to determine the physical properties, hydrogen bonding index (HBI) and transmission electron microscopy to observe the phase-separation phenomena in the materials, and 3T3 fibroblast to evaluate the dependence of the cell proliferation at 37°C on the material properties. Our results show that cell attachment and proliferation are closely related to the cell growth surface, which in turn is controlled by (1) the ratio of hard to total segment concentration and (2) the recrystallization temperature (Tc) of PU. To obtain a good cell growth surface, the ratio of hard to total segment concentration is found to be between 0.4 and 0.6, and HBI is between 1.5 and 2.1. Furthermore, when the Tc of PU is near the physiology temperature, a stable surface for cell growth can be provided. The shorter molecules in the soft segment region can rearrange the molecular chain at 37°C.

    Notes: Four stainless steel alloys, commonly used for surgical needles were tensile and bend tested. The materials included: ASTM 42000, ASTM 45500, ASTM 30200, and a Fe-12Cr-8.5Ni-3.2Mo-1.9Ti alloy. Small diameter wires in a wide range of strength levels were produced using various heat treatments and/or cold drawing. Samples from each processing condition were tensile and bend tested. Calculated yield moment and ultimate moment were determined using tensile yield strength, the flexural formula (M(y) = σ(y) I/C), and the shape factor for circular cross sections (M(u)/M(y) = 1.7). A deviation was observed between the theoretically calculated yield moment and a 2° offset measured yield moment. This was expected because moment-strain diagrams provide only an approximation of yield moment due to the gradual departure from linearity. The 2° offset yield was termed the surgical yield because it represents the strain at which a surgical needle would start to lose functionality. A nonlinear relationship (R) was observed between measured and calculated values. The relationship (R) proved to be a function of cold work by wire drawing as measured by the change in wire length (ΔL), R = a - b * In(ΔL). This suggests that engineers selecting materials for bending applications such as surgical needles cannot use tensile data alone to predict bend strength. Processing history must also be known. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Construction details for modifying the Brice light-scattering photometer for use in photoelectric polarimetry have been given. The measuring technique is based on the Rouy method, which is perhaps the most sensitive of all photoelectric methods of measuring the optical rotation of liquids, especially at small angles. A standard deviation of 0.01° has been observed with the use of an instrument modified in this way.

    Notes: The dependence of the rate of emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate on the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate has been studied using the Mx+-N2H5OH system as initiator (where Mx+ is Cu2+, Fe3+, and Mn3+). It was found that the rate dependence on soap concentration was different for each initiator. The extent of this variation was: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Rp }\alpha {\rm }\left[ {{\rm Soap}} \right]^{0.18 - 0.55} $$\end{document} The variation is large enough to show that the dependence of the rate of emulsion polymerization on soap concentration is not simply a function of the solubility of the monomer in water, as had been suggested by Gershberg.

    Notes: The kinetics of the emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the cupric sulfate-hydrazine system in the presence of oxygen have been evaluated.A maximum rate of polymerization occurs at a cupric sulfate concentration of 1.8 × 10-4 mole liter-1. The adsorption of cupric ion on the micelles and the adsorption of soap on cupric hydroxide are discussed as an explanation of this effect.A reaction between hydrazine and methyl methacrylate produces a surface active agent which enhances the rate of polymerization and increases the number of particles at high ratios of monomer concentration to soap concentration.The kinetics follow the mechanism of Gershberg rather than that of Smith and Ewart, and the initiation of the emulsion polymerization appears to take place inside the micelle rather than in the aqueous phase as was proposed by van der Hoff for styrene.The activation energy for the complete process is 23.7 kcal mole-1.

    Notes: The current study investigated the effects of vary epoxides on linking capacity of collagen to carboxyl-group-enriched polyurethane (PU) and the consequent effects on the growth of endothelial cells. Epoxides of EX-810, 1,4BDE, DER732, DER331, and DER332 were initially reacted with the carboxyl groups of PU substrates at 110°C for 20 h. Free epoxy rings of epoxide-PU substrates, characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and quantified by titration with HCl and NaOH, were available for collagen grafting. The amounts of collagen grafted were in accordance with the amounts of free epoxy rings detected and correlated with the growth of endothelial cells on the substrates. Our results indicated that epoxides with shorter aliphatic intermediate chain can graft more collagen to the epoxide-PU substrates than epoxides with longer intermediate chain or with aromatic groups. Epoxides were also demonstrated to be nontoxic linking agents for biomaterials. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res, 39, 630-636, 1998.
