Notes: Abstract In laboratory bioassays, males ofMatsucoccus resinosae fromPinus resinosa in New York andMatsucoccus n. sp. fromPinus thunbergiana in Korea were strongly attracted to crude hexane extracts ofM. resinosae females, andM. resinosae males responded strongly to extracts ofMatsucoccus n. sp. females. Males of the two species responded similarly to gas chromatographic fractions and subfractions of a pentane extract ofM. resinosae females. Sex pheromones of these two species appear to be the same or very similar.

Notes: Abstract Attraction of (2E,4E,6R,10R)-4,6,10,12-tetramethyl-2,4-tridecadien-7-one [1; (6R,10R)-matsuone] and its antipode [2; (6S,10S)-matsuone] toMatsucoccus thunbergianae males was studied in the laboratory and in the field. They showed stronger response to1. In laboratory bioassays, the threshold concentrations for male attraction with1 and2 were 16 fg and 150 pg, respectively. In the field, during the first two days after traps were set, traps baited with 50 µg of1 on rubber septa or filter paper rolls caught more males than control traps. Between the sixth day and the tenth day after traps were set, in a daily trap catch experiment, the traps with 50 µg of1 on filter paper rolls caught more males than control traps on one day only, whereas those on rubber septa were always effective. The shape of the traps did not affect male catches. Males were caught on pheromone traps in locations where no scales were found by the customary detecting procedures.

Description: Author(s): Gwangsu Yoo, Jinhong Park, S.-S. B. Lee, and H.-S. Sim We predict that an anisotropic charge Kondo effect appears in a triple quantum dot, when the system has twofold degenerate ground states of (1,1,0) and (0,0,1) charge configurations. Using bosonization and refermionization methods, we find that at low temperature the system has the two different pha... [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 236601] Published Tue Dec 02, 2014

Description: An overview of several multivariate image processing techniques is presented, with emphasis on techniques based upon the principal component transformation (PCT). Multiimages in various formats have a multivariate pixel value, associated with each pixel location, which has been scaled and quantized into a gray level vector, and the bivariate of the extent to which two images are correlated. The PCT of a multiimage decorrelates the multiimage to reduce its dimensionality and reveal its intercomponent dependencies if some off-diagonal elements are not small, and for the purposes of display the principal component images must be postprocessed into multiimage format. The principal component analysis of a multiimage is a statistical analysis based upon the PCT whose primary application is to determine the intrinsic component dimensionality of the multiimage. Computational considerations are also discussed.

Description: Mathematical analysis of image sampling and interpolative reconstruction is summarized and extended to two dimensions for application to data acquired from satellite sensors such as the Thematic mapper and SPOT. It is shown that sample-scene phase influences the reconstruction of sampled images, adds a considerable blur to the average system point spread function, and decreases the average system modulation transfer function. It is also determined that the parametric bicubic interpolator with alpha = -0.5 is more radiometrically accurate than the conventional bicubic interpolator with alpha = -1, and this at no additional cost. Finally, the parametric bicubic interpolator is found to be suitable for adaptive implementation by relating the alpha parameter to the local frequency content of an image.

Description: From basic considerations and Beer's law, a leaf water content index incorporating reflectances of wavelengths from 0.76 to 0.90 microns and from 1.55 to 1.75 microns was developed that relates leaf reflectance to leaf relative water content. For the leaf succulent, Agave deserti, the leaf water content index was not significantly different from the relative water content for either individual leaves or an entire plant. Also, the relative water contents of intact plants of Encelia farinosa and Hilaria rigida in the field were estimated by the leaf water content index; variations in the proportion of living to dead leaf area could cause large errors in the estimate of relative water content. Thus, the leaf water content index may be able to estimate average relative water content of canopies when TM4 and TM5 are measured at a known relative water content and fraction of dead leaf material.
