    Notizen: Abstract In this paper we study the problem of determining the effective permeability on a coarse scale level of problems with strongly varying and discontinuous coefficients defined on a fine scale. The upscaled permeability is defined as the solution of an optimization problem, where the difference between the fine scale and the coarse scale velocity field is minimized. We show that it is not necessary to solve the fine scale pressure equation in order to minimize the associated cost‐functional. Furthermore, we derive a simple technique for computing the derivatives of the cost‐functional needed in the fix‐point iteration used to compute the optimal permeability on the coarse mesh. Finally, the method is illustrated by several analytical examples and numerical experiments.

    Notizen: Abstract We study the simultaneous one-dimensional flow of water and oil in a heterogeneous medium modelled by the Buckley-Leverett equation. It is shown both by analytical solutions and by numerical experiments that this hyperbolic model is unstable in the following sense: Perturbations in physical parameters in a tiny region of the reservoir may lead to a totally different picture of the flow. This means that simulation results obtained by solving the hyperbolic Buckley-Leverett equation may be unreliable.

    Beschreibung: This open access text aims at giving you the simplest possible introduction to differential equations that are used in models of electrophysiology. It covers models at several spatial and temporal scales with associated numerical methods. The text demonstrates that a very limited number of fundamental techniques can be used to define numerical methods for equations ranging from ridiculously simple to extremely complex systems of partial differential equations. Every method is implemented in Matlab and the codes are freely available online. By using these codes, the reader becomes familiar with classical models of electrophysiology, like the cable equation, the monodomain model, and the bidomain model. But modern models that have just started to gain attention in the field of computational electrophysiology are also presented. If you just want to read one book, it should probably not be this one, but if you want a simple introduction to a complex field, it is worth considering the present text.
