Notes: Environmental effects on the electronic structure of molecules caused by external perturbations are studied by means of an expansion of molecular orbital wave functions into valence-bond (VB) wave functions. Applications are carried out to the π system of butadiene, hydroxyethylene, acrolein, and carbonyl oxide and also to the full electronic system of water. The external perturbations considered are uniform electric fields, nonuniform electric fields, and reaction fields created by solvents. A different behavior is found between nonpolar and polar species in the presence of solvents. Some consequences on the behavior of molecules under the influence of the different electric fields are discussed.

Notes: Valence-bond calculations have been carried out on ZnO and HgO using a basis set of Slatertype atomic orbitals and the one- and two-electron integrals as computed in the semiempirical AM1 molecular orbital method. The zero differential overlap approximation has been used to calculate integrals between atomic orbital Slater determinants using the rules for matrix elements between determinants formed by orthogonal orbitals. Diabatic and adiabatic curves have been analyzed for the two systems, and results compared with molecular orbital AM1 results. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Exact quantum molecular overlaplike and Coulomb-like self-similarity measures are studied in a selected series of molecules with the same number of electrons. It is found that quantum molecular overlap self-similarity measures can be used to estimate the concentration of electronic charge in molecules. A good linear relationship between the overlap self-similarity measure and the volume is found for molecules with the same number of electrons when the atoms of the systems being compared belong to the same row of the periodic table. Finally, an upper bound for the quantum molecular overlap self-similarity measure of molecules with a number of electrons up to 54 is given from the atomic quantum self-similarity measures obtained using Slater-type functions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: An ab initio 3-21G study of the direct addition of HF to C2HnF(4-n), with n = 0 to 4, has been performed to investigate the effect of the substituent on the reaction. Geometry optimization of all charge-transfer complexes and transition states has been done. Standard analysis of activation energies of addition reactions, vibrational and thermodynamical analysis, as well as Morokuma energy decomposition, BSSE correction, PMO analysis, and Pauling bond orders were used to explain the results. A subset of the reactions, including that of C2H4 as reference one and the two most favorable cases, was also studied at the MP2/6-31G(d,p)//HF/6-31G(d,p) level. The barriers so obtained are in agreement with the indirectly found from experimental data. It was found that the effect of the substituent is not monotonic for the additions. Decomposition of the interaction energy is shown to be adequate to explain this nonmonotonic behavior. The implications for laser chemistry of the addition of hydrogen halides to fluorosubstituted olefins is briefly discussed.

Notes: A set of procedures for rapid calculation of quantum molecular similarities from ab initio wave functions is discussed. In all cases a density fitting is carried out to eliminate the need of calculating costly four-centered integrals. It is proved that this methodology can be applied to large systems to reproduce exact quantum molecular similarity measures at an extremely low computational cost. © 1994 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The structures and relative stabilities of a series of disulfide (XSSX) and thiosulfoxide (X2SS) isomers have been studied for X = F, Cl, CH3, and H, using various levels of conventional ab initio and density functional theory (DFT). The XSSX isomers are more stable than the X2SS isomers for all substituents. The energy gap ΔE(X) between the two isomers increases (i.e., XSSX becomes more stable with respect to X2SS), and the S—S bond contracts in the series for X = F, Cl, CH3, H. The results are interpreted by means of natural population analysis (NPA) (e.g., the interaction between the disulfide moiety S2· and the two substituents X·). The bonding in the hypervalent X2SS species is similar to the bonding in the nonhypervalent XSSX and does not involve a special role for sulfur-3d orbitals. These orbitals acquire only minimal populations and are not to be conceived as valence orbitals. The DFT and conventional ab initio results, Xα/DZP and MP2/6-31G** optimized structures and isomerization energies (at the highest levels of both methods), agree well. © 1995 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
