    Notes: The applicability of the local density approximation (LDA) and of corresponding gradient corrections (for the exchange and correlation energy) for the treatment of the hydrogen bond is investigated. As test systems, we consider the water dimer and the H2O…HX complexes (X = F, Cl, Br): Using an LCAO scheme, their equilibrium geometries and interaction energies are ćalculated and compared with experimental data and with other calculations. We obtain that the LDA gives the geometries in qualitative agreement with other data, whereas the energies are overestimated. The use of the gradient corrections (GC) according to Becke and Perdew leads to a significant improvement of the geometry, and especially of the interaction energies. The calculations indicate further that LDA + GC should also be able to describe weaker intermolecular interactions than the usual hydrogen bond. Finally, a short discussion of the charge distribution and the dipole moments of the H2O…HX complexes is performed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The structure and electronic structure of heavy-group V cluster anions (Sbn-, Bin-) are calculated with density functional methods within the local spin density approximation (LSDA). The influence of gradient corrections of the exchange and correlation energy is investigated. The calculated vertical and adiabatic ionization energies are in very good agreement with data from photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) for Sbn-, whereas the relatively large deviations for Bin- can be reduced by the consideration of relativistic effects in a scalar-relativistic manner. Concerning the structures, a strong similarity to the corresponding Pn- clusters was found. In particular, the negatively charged pentamers are planar rings (with similarities to the aromatic [C5H5]- anion) with especially high ionization energies. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A simplified LCAO-DFT-LDA scheme for calculations of structure and electronic structure of large molecules, clusters, and solids is presented. Forces on the atoms are calculated in a semiempirical way considering the electronic states. The small computational effort of this treatment allows one to perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of molecules and clusters up to a few hundred atoms as well as corresponding simulations of condensed systems within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The accuracy of the method is illustrated by the results of calculations for a series of small molecules and clusters. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
