    Description: The experiment to measure the composition and distribution of the ambient lunar atmosphere by mass spectrometer is reported. The lunar orbital mass spectrometer is described along with the calibration procedures for the instrument. Preliminary results indicate that a large number of gas molecules were observed in the vicinity of the spacecraft in lunar orbit. Many of these molecules are considered to be of spacecraft origin.

    Description: A study, made to calibrate the ultraviolet spectra of stars to within an absolute accuracy of 10%, is summarized. Data were taken by a 13 inch UVR telescope onboard several rocket flights. Calibrated and existing ground based data are in reasonable agreement. Calibrated results are presented in graphical form.

    Description: On the Apollo 17 mission, a miniature mass spectrometer, called the lunar atmospheric composition experiment (LACE), was carried to the moon as part of the Apollo lunar surface experiments package (ALSEP) to study the composition of and variation in the lunar atmosphere. The instrument was successfully deployed in the Taurus-Littrow valley with its entrance aperture oriented upward to intercept and measure the downward flux of gases at the lunar surface. Initial activation of the LACE instrument occurred on December 27, 1972, approximately 50 hr after sunset, and operation continued throughout the first lunar night. Sunrise brought a high background gas level and necessitated discontinuing operation during lunar daytime except for a brief check near noon. Near sunset, operation was resumed and continued throughout the night. This sequence was repeated for the second and third lunations.

    Description: NASA has developed an airborne SAR that simultaneously yields image data in four linear polarizations in L-band with 10-m resolution over a swath of about 10 km. Signal data are recorded both optically and digitally and annotated in each of the channels to facilitate completely automated digital correlation. Comparison of the relative intensities of the different polarizations furnishes discriminatory mapping information. Local intensity variations in like-polarization images result from topographic effects, while strong cross polarization responses denote the effects of vegetation cover and, in some cases, possible scattering from the subsurface. In each of the areas studied, multiple polarization data led to the discrimination and mapping of unique surface unit features.
