    Notes: Abstract We studied social organization, behavior, and range use of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti) at Wuyapiya (99°12′E, 28°30′N, the People's Republic of China) over 12 months between May 1992 and June 1994. The Wuyapiya band contained ≥175 members and had two levels of social organization. At one level, the monkeys formed multifemale, one-male units (OMUs) similar to those of many other colobines. At another level, 15 to 18 OMUs traveled together in a cohesive band. Unlike the bands of other species of Rhinopithecus, the Wuyapiya band of R. bieti did not show seasonal fission–fusion, although some social behavior, such as male–male aggression, was seasonal. With regard to range use, the Wuyapiya band had a large home range and long daily travel distances compared with other colobines. Minimum range size in 1 year at Wuyapiya is 16.25 km 2 , although there is no asymptote for range size as a function of observation time. Range size for the Wuyapiya band is 25.25 km 2 over the 2-year study and appeared to cover 100 km 2 between 1985 and 1994. The primary food of R. bieti at Wuyapiya is lichens, which are ubiquitous in fir trees. The multitiered social organization of R. bieti appears to result from the interaction of food resource characters with the forces of mate competition, with band sizes based on female responses to the spatial and temporal characteristics of lichens and subdivisions within bands based on male competition for mates.

    Notes: Abstract Qilu Hu is a large (A = 36.9 km2), shallow (zmax = 6.8 m) lake that lies at an elevation of 1797 m above msl on the Yunnan Plateau, southern China. Lake waters are hard (Mg = 3.2m eq L−1, Ca = 1.3 meq L−1 ), fresh (conductivity = 380 μS cm −1), and productive (Secchi 〈 40 cm). An 11-m sediment core has a basal 14C age of 30960 ± 860 B.P. Sediments between 11 m and 6 m are high in % dry weight, rich in clay components Al2O3, Fe2O3, K2O, MgO, and low in organic C (≤6.1%), carbonate-C (〈1.0%), total N (〈3.2 mg g−1), and total S (〈-1.7 mg g−1). Diatoms and pollen indicate open-water conditions between 9.0 m and 6.0 m (1342011790 B.P.). Above 6.0 m, CaCO3 and organic matter concentrations increase relative to clastics. The transition marks a change to shallow-water conditions as inferred from diatoms and pollen, and probably reflects a shift to drier climate. Uppermost (80-0 cm) red clays were deposited rapidly, probably as a consequence of recent (decades to centuries) riparian disturbances (e.g. agriculture, lake-bottom reclamation, urban development). Dates assigned to events in the Qilu Hu profile are tentative because of potential hard-water-lake error.

    Description: The genus Stantonia Ashmead, 1904 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Orgilinae) is reviewed for Vietnam, China, Japan, and Russia. Six new species of the genus Stantonia are described and illustrated: Stantonia brevicaudata van Achterberg, sp. n., S. dickyyui van Achterberg & Long, sp. n., S. granulata Long & van Achterberg, sp. n., S. robustifemur van Achterberg & Long, sp. n., S. stilpnosoma Long & van Achterberg, sp. n., and S. vietnamica van Achterberg, sp. n. A new subgenus (Planitonia subg. n.: type species Stantonia robustifemur van Achterberg & Long, sp. n.) is proposed for the species with a flat clypeus and face, and reduced vein r-m of the fore wing. Three species are newly recorded from Vietnam: Stantonia gracilis van Achterberg, 1987, S. sumatrana Enderlein, 1908, and S. tianmushana Chen, He & Ma, 2004. A key to species of Stantonia from Vietnam, China, Russia, and Japan is provided.

    Description: Microsatellite enriched library of Hyriopsis cumingii was constructed according to the strong affinity between biotin and streptavidin. One hundred clones with foreign inserts were sequenced and 65 clones were screened for usable microsatellites, of which 36 were deemed unique, of sufficient length (more than 8 repeats) and possessed adequate flanking regions for primer designment. Among 36 primer pairs designed, 25 yielded scorable amplification products. Upon testing 30 individuals were sampled using the 25 pair primers from Dongting Lake of Hunan Province, China. Then thirteen polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated and characterized. These loci exhibited high levels of genetic polymorphism, so the observed number of alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 9. The ranges of observed and expected heterozygosity were 0.2543 to 0.8913 and 0.3629 to 0.8217, respectively, and the average polymorphic information content was 0.5198. Two microsatellite loci were significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium due to the presence of null alleles, and no linkage disequilibrium found. These microsatellite loci will be useful for assessing the genetic diversity and population structure of H. cumingii.
