    Notes: The reaction rate of gaseous acetylene and hydrogen chloride was studied experimentally on a mercuric chloride-activated carbon catalyst at pressures from 1 to 4 atm. and temperatures of 167°, 212°, and 257°F. The measurements were made in a differential reactor packed with mercuric chloride impregnated on activated carbon, the data being taken to obtain the separate effect of the partial pressure of each of the components on the rate.The results indicated that hydrogen chloride was strongly adsorbed on the catalyst and that vinyl chloride was also adsorbed to a significant extent. A rate equation, which well represented the data, was developed from the following postulates: (a) acetylene is adsorbed on the catalyst on one type of site, (b) hydrogen chloride and vinyl chloride are adsorbed on a different kind of site, (c) the formation of vinyl chloride occurs by reaction of adsorbed acetylene and adsorbed hydrogen chloride, and (d) the rates of adsorption and desorption are fast compared with the formation rate of vinyl chloride.

    Notes: A study is made of the structure and properties of material balance simulation problems, and a technique is developed for their efficient solution. The method requires neither simultaneous solution of all balance equations nor iterative convergence methods. Instead, for each stream mixing point in the flow sheet, a vector balance equation is developed which contains as unknowns only mixer output streams. This unique set of vector equations is sequenced for solution by using precedence ordering and substitution techniques. It is shown that only as many vector equations need to be solved simultaneously as there are streams which would require iteration in the conventional sequential approach. Once the mixer output streams are calculated, the remaining intermediate process streams are evaluated directly with no further equation solving. Computational results are presented showing the efficiency of the method.

    Notes: Three point bend tests of notched, polyetherimide (PEI) beams are performed for varying notch radii and beam thicknesses. Finite element stress results including pressure sensitive yielding effects are correlated with experimental load-to-craze observations to determine the three-dimensional stress state at craze initiation. Three crazing criteria; maximum principal stress, hydrostatic stress, and the critical strain criterion of Oxborough and Bowden are examined for consistency. Over the range of geometries studied, the critical strain criterion provides the best fit to the experimental data. This criterion could be used as a brittle failure criterion to help understand and prevent brittle failures.

    Notes: A number of norbornene-functionalized resins were prepared and their photoinitiated crosslinking reaction with a multifunctional thiol was studied. Access to these novel resins can be gained by several synthetic routes. The most general of these routes is the [4π + 2π] cycloaddition reaction (the Diels-Alder reaction) of the corresponding multifunctional acrylate ester with cyclopentadiene (CPD) monomer. The photocrosslinking reaction of these resins with multifunctional thiols such as pentaerythritol tetramercaptopropionate (PETMP) is quite rapid and sensitive to low UV dose as well as dose rate. FT-IR cure studies also indicated that the cure rate slows down dramatically as the conversion approaches the calculated gel points for the systems under study. Mechanical properties of cured thin films of these materials exhibited a wide range of tensile and dynamic mechanical properties, which depended on the structure of starting materials used in the preparation of the norbornene resin and the crosslinking thiol.

    Notes: Precipitation temperature measurements have been the exclusive source of thermodynamic parameters used for the comparison of polymers differing in tacticity. The Flory theta temperatures differ for the various tactic forms, although not in a manner which exhibits any obvious consistency. The precipitation temperature entropy parameters, on the other hand, have been larger for the isotactic polymer in every case but one. The theoretical treatment underlying the evaluation of ψ1 from precipitation temperature data is, unfortunately, not strictly valid. Thus, the interpretation of this behavior is in some doubt. We report the results of an osmotic study of isotactic and atactic poly-l-pentene in phenetole at three temperatures. For the isotactic and atactic modification the respective values found were Θ = 329.0 and 321.5°K., while for ψ1 the values were 0.45 and 0.72. The theta temperatures fall in the same order as those previously obtained for a closely related system, poly-l-butene-anisole, by precipitation temperature measurements. The osmotic ψ1 values are larger than those reported here-tofore for other systems, but of more importance, they fall in the reverse of the order consistently obtained from precipitation temperatures. This suggests that the regular variation of the precipitation temperature ψ1 values can not have its origin in local pair interaction effects; instead, it must reflect some difference in the concentration dependence of the chemical potential for solutions of the various tactic forms.
