Description / Table of Contents: It was found that the counting rate in the β-backscattering for a given counting assembly is nearly linear to the chlorine content of chlorinated PVC and PE within the range between 35 and 73% chlorine. Because of its reliability and the easy use, the β-backscattering method is advantageous for chlorine analysis in polymers. The mean error of the mean value is ≦0.2% chlorine.

Description / Table of Contents: In order to characterize the chemical inhomogeneity of CPVC the distribution frequency of partial structures obtained by NMR measurements are compared with the thermal dispersion as measured by DSC. The slope of the DSC glass transition curve was found to correlate with the chemical inhomogeniety introduced by the preparation of CPVC, while the average glass transition temperature Tg is scarcely affected by the chemical inhomogeniety. The chain degradation of PVC in radiation chlorination was determined by osmometry and is compared with the degradation observed in an inert gas atmosphere.
