    Notes: The work presented in this paper comprises synthesis and study of poly(oxine-methylene)sSystematic name: poly(8-hydroxyquinolinediylmethylene)s.. The synthesis is based on Friedel-Crafts polyalkylation of 8-quinolinol, commonly known as oxine, with dichloromethane in presence of anhydrous aluminium trichloride. Five polymer samples are prepared by varying molar proportions of the two monomers. The polymer samples are insoluble in commonly used organic solvents. They are soluble in acetic acid, formic acid, and in conc. sulfuric acid. The IR and UV spectral characteristics of the polymer samples are reported. Molecular weight of the polymer samples is estimated by conductometric titration in pyridine against standard sodium methoxide. Viscometric study is carried out both in formic acid and glacial acetic acid at 35°C. Solutions of polymer samples in formic acid show normal behaviour and those in glacial acetic acid show abnormal behaviour. Various empirical relations are applied to correlate these data in glacial acetic acid. Acetic acid containing water and simple electrolytes is used as a medium to suppress abnormal behaviour. The thermal properties of the polymer samples are also studied. All the results of analysis are adequately correlated. One oxine-formaldehyde polymer sample was also synthesized for comparison.

    Notes: Poly(8-hydroxyquinoline-7,5-diylethylene) (3) was prepared both by Friedel-Craft's condensation of 8-hydroxyquinoline (1) with 1,2-dichloroethane (2) in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride and by condensation of 1 with ethylene glycol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The polymer samples were found to be insoluble in acetic acid, sulfuric acid, conc. hydrochloric acid, or formic acid. They were characterized by IR and UV spectra. Their molecular weights were determined by conductometric titration in pyridine. Viscometric studies were carried out in formic acid and in glacial acetic acid at 35°C. Solutions of the polymer samples in formic acid showed normal behaviour, whereas those in glacial acetic acid showed an abnormal behaviour. Various empirical relations were applied to correlate the viscosity data of solutions in glacial acetic acid with the appropriate concentration function. Aqueous acetic acid and simple electrolytes were used as solvents to supress the abnormal behaviour.

    Notes: Polyethers are prepared by condensing, respectively, 2,4-dichloroquinoline and its 6-methyl and 6-methoxy derivatives separately with ethylene, propylene, butylene, diethylene and triethylene glycols. These polyethers are characterized and the electrical conductivity of polyethers is measured at various temperatures up to 150°C.

    Notes: Poly[N,N′-(sulfo-phenylene)phthalamid]es and poly[N,N′-(sulfo-p-phenylene)pyromellitimide] were prepared in water-soluble form and were found to have unique solution properties, similar in some respects to xanthan. The polymer most investigated, poly[N,N′-(sulfo-p-phenylene)terephthalamide] (PPT-S), is produced as the dimethylacetamide (DMAC) salt by the solution polymerization of 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid with terephthaloyl chloride in DMAC containing LiCl. The isolated polymer requires heating in water to dissolve; the resulting cooled solutions are viscous or gels at concentrations as low as 0.4%. They are highly birefringent, exhibit circular dichroism properties, and are viscosity-sensitive to salt. Solutions of this polymer mixed with those of guar or hydroxyethyl cellulose give significantly enhanced viscosity. The polymer is relatively low molecular weight, ca. 5000 estimated from viscosity data. Some meta and para isomeric analogs of PPT-S were prepared; these polymers have similar properties except they are more soluble in water, and higher concentrations are required to obtain significant viscosity. Poly[N,N′-(sulfo-p-phenylene) pyromellitimide] (PIM-S) was prepared similarly from 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid and pyromellitic dianhydride. Its aqueous solution properties are similar to those of PPT-S. It appears that these relatively low-molecular-weight rigid-chain polymers associate in water to form a network that results in viscous solutions at low concentrations.

    Notes: Acidity constants of 3-, 4- and 5-chloro-o-toluidinium ions have been measured at 25° in aqueous dioxane media containing 20, 45, 70 and 72 wt.% of 1.4-dioxane by pH metry. The necessary correction factors to convert pH meter readings into stoichiometric pH have been evaluated. The relation between the strength of anilinium ions and various solvent properties has been discussed. A HAMMETT type relation has been developed for correlating the acid strength of these disubstituted anilinium ions with HAMMETT's structural parameters.

    Notes: The rate constants and the kinetic parameters of the reaction of phenacyl bromide with mono and disubstituted anilines in ethanol have been determined. The substituent effects on the free energy of activation have been found to be additive. HAMMETT equation for multiple substitution was applied to correlate reactivity with structural parameters. The substituent effect is separated into inductive and resonance effects.

    Description / Table of Contents: Thermisch beständige und halbleitende Polymere wurden durch Kondensation von Benzidin-3,3′-dicarbonsäure mit Dicarbonylverbindungen wie Glyoxal, Cyclohexan-1,4-dion, 4,4′-Diacetyldiphenylether und Benzil bei unterschiedlichen experimentellen Bedingungen hergestellt. Diese Poly-Schiff-Basen sind in herkömmlichen organischen Lösungsmitteln unlöslich. Sie wurden mittels IR- und Viskositätsuntersuchungen, thermischer Analyse und Untersuchung der elektrischen Eigenschaften bei verschiedenen Temperaturen charakterisiert. Die Temperaturabhängigkeit der elektrischen Leitfähigkeit σ ergab eine Bestätigung der empirischen Beziehung: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \sigma = \sigma _0 \cdot {\rm e}^{{{ - {\rm E}} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{ - {\rm E}} {{\rm kT}}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {{\rm kT}}}} $\end{document}
    Notes: Thermally stable and semiconducting polymers are synthesized by condensing benzidine-3,3′-dicarboxylic acid (BDC), with dicarbonyl compounds like glyoxal, cyclohexane-1,4-dione, 4,4′-diacetyl diphenyl ether and benzil under different experimental conditions. These poly Schiff bases are insoluble in common organic solvents. They are characterized by IR- and viscosity studies, thermal analysis, and the study of electrical properties at various temperatures. Variation of the electrical conductivity, σ, with temperature was found to confirm with the empirical relation: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \sigma = \sigma _0 \cdot {\rm e}^{{{ - {\rm E}} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{ - {\rm E}} {{\rm kT}}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {{\rm kT}}}} $\end{document}
