Notes: A large number of resins have been synthesized by reacting cardanol, a constituent of cashewnut shell liquid, with formaldehyde and substituted aromatic compounds in the presence of acidic and basic catalysts. The resins have been characterized by IR spectra. They were shown to be selective ion exchangers for certain metal ions. A batch equilibrium method was used for studying the selectivity of the metal ions. The thermal behaviour of the resins has been studied and a plausible degradation mechanism has been suggested.

Notes: The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto Mulberry silk fibers was studied in aqueous solution using Mn(acac)3 as initiator. Perchloric acid was found to catalyze the reaction. The rate of grafting was investigated by varying the concentration of the monomer and the complex, acidity of the medium, the solvent composition of the reaction medium, the surfactants, and the inhibitors. The graft yield increases with increasing concentration of Mn(acac)3 up to 0.01 mol/L, decreasing thereafter. Increase of MMA concentration up to 0.56 mol/L increases graft yield, and thereafter it decreases. Among the various vinyl monomers studied, MMA was found to be most suitable for grafting. Grafting increases up to 7.5 × 10-3 mol/L of HClO4 concentration, and thereafter it decreases. A suitable reaction scheme has been proposed and a rate equation has been derived. The energy of activation has been calculated from the Arrhenius plot. The chain transfer constants for various chain transfer solvents have been evaluated from the average molecular weight (M̄) of grafted poly(methyl methacrylate).

Notes: Substituted aromatic compounds incorporated-cardanol-formaldehyde novolac resins were synthesized by acid base catalyzed reactions. A number of improved high temperature stable interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) were prepared by condensing novolac resins and polyurethanes prepared from castor oil and diisocyanates of varying NCO/OH ratio. The structure of these semi-IPNs were studied using various characterization techniques such as IR, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The scanning electron microscopy of some of the semi-IPNs have been studied and the morphology has been examined. The samples were subjected to wide angle X-ray diffraction analysis. The degree of crystallinity (Xcr) was computed on the basis of the crystal defect concept, developed by Ruland and Vonk. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35: 3117-3124, 1997

Notes: Some resins have been synthesized by reacting quinacetophenone with substituted benzoic acids and furfuraldehyde in the presence of basic catalysts. The resins have been characterized by IR spectra of the characteristic groups. The number average molecular weights of the resins have been evaluated by the conductance method. The solubility and viscosity behaviors of the resin copolymers have been determined. Cu+2, Ni+2, Co+2, Mn+2, and Mg+2 chelates have been prepared. The resins were shown to be selective ion-exchange resins for certain metal ions. A batch equilibrium method was used for studying the selectivity of the metal ions. The thermal behavior of the resins has been determined and the values of energy of activation of the resins were computed by using the Freeman-Anderson and Broido methods. The biological assays of some of the resin copolymers were found to be highly sensitive.

Notes: A number of resin copolymers have been prepared by condensing some substituted acetophenones with chloro-substituted anilines, benzoic acids, and formaldehyde. The reactivity ratios of the monomers have been computed by using the Kelen-Tüdos equation. The results have been discussed taking into account the inductive, resonance, and steric effects of the substituents.

Notes: A variety of crosslinked resin copolymers have been synthesized by condensing o-hydroxy acetophenone with formaldehyde and chloro-substituted benzoic acids and anilines in the presence of acidic and basic catalysts. The physico-chemical properties of the resins are reported. The thermogravimetric analysis method was used to study the thermal behaviour of the resins; the evolution of kinetic parameters and degradation mechanism was also investigated. Resins from chlorobenzoic acids showed clear two-step degradation neglecting moisture loss, whereas those from chloro anilines gave a somewhat continuous sigmoid. The effect of reaction conditions like monomer, molar ratio, and catalyst is also reported. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
