Notes: The widths at half-value of high-resolution NMR spectra of bound water of cellulose were studied in relation to the temperature change. Two points were made clear: First, the amount of bound water of the cellulose sample can be pointed out with higher accuracy the lower the temperature of the measurement. Second, it is possible to determine in a simple manner the boundary temperature Tc at which water molecules become bound by the cellulose. Tc is characteristic of the cellulose sample of a given water content and corresponds to the glass transition temperature of the water-containing sample. The measurements appear to be readily applicable to other hydrophilic polymers.

Notes: The effects of kind of acid and irradiation of ultraviolet light on the graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto cellulose with adsorbed ceric ion were investigated. Irrespective of ultraviolet light irradiation, the amount of reduced ceric ion in the reaction systems was increased in the order HCl 〉 HClO4 〉 HNO3 〉 H2SO4, and the number of grafts formed was increased in the order HClO4 〉 HNO3 〉 HCl 〉 H2SO4. Thus, it was definitely observed that the graft copolymerization is affected by the kind of acid. Ultraviolet light remarkably accelerated the reduction of ceric ion adsorbed on cellulose in the various acid mediums, but decreased the efficiency of graft formation. The most favorable results for the formation of grafts were obtained in the system in which HClO4 and ultraviolet irradiation was employed. A combination of H2SO4 and ultraviolet irradiation resulted in the lowest per cent grafting and average molecular weight of grafts. It was found that H2SO4 characteristically dissolves out ceric ion adsorbed into an aqueous solution and accelerates the formation of homopolymer.

Notes: The ESR spectra of untreated samples and photosensitized samples of rayon cellulose, amorphous cellulose, and wood cellulose irradiated with ultraviolet light were studied. Generally, several kinds of spectra were established, and ferric ion photosensitizer increased the yield of free radicals in celluloses on irradiation. The observed five-line spectrum was resolved to be a superposition of single-line, two-line, and three-line spectra. The decay of free radicals of celluloses at ambient temperature was also examined for changes of the pattern and the intensities of ESR spectra. Based on the changes of spectra induced by a warm-up process, three kinds of radicals which gave three components of the five-line spectrum were identified. During the warm-up process, phenomena of radical migration and formation of new radicals synchronized with the decay of radicals were recognized on photosensitized samples of rayon cellulose and amorphous cellulose.

Notes: Photo-induced graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate on oxidized poly(vinyl alcohol) fiber was investigated. Oxidation of the fiber sample with sodium hypochlorite or periodic acid led the radical formation by photo-irradiation to intensify markedly. ESR spectra of the irradiated oxidized sample proved that a considerable amount of triplet component radical was contained in it, whereas the unoxidized sample mostly indicated a singlet. The spectra found in the irradiated unoxidized sample was assigned to two radicals, I and II, and for the oxidized sample, to III and IV. The spectrum for I must be a singlet, and a triplet for II, III, and IV. Among the last three, II was less stable toward heat. As the oxidized sample has a high activity for photoinitiation, the radicals of III and IV are presumed to be the sites of graft copolymerization:

Notes: The stability of saccharide radicals induced by UV irradiation at room temperature and the ability to initiate polymerization of acrylamide were investigated. UV light of 220 〈 λ 〈 300 nm was proved to form saccharide radicals effectively at room temperature. ESR signal intensity of the irradiated saccharide was in the order of sucrose 〉 methyl-α-D-glucopyranoside ≫ cellobiose 〉 D-xylose 〉 D-glucose α D-fructose. The saccharide radicals were fairly stable at room temperature, however, the markedly declined in amount as the samples were brought to their own melting points or allowed contact with water. When an aqueous solution of acrylamide was added to the irradiated saccharide, polymerization was initiated and the conversion increased with an increasing amount of the preirradiated saccharide. Regarding the kind of saccharide, the conversion decreased in the following order: sucrose 〉 methyl-α-D-glucopyranoside 〉 cellobiose 〉 D-glucose, which indicated a good agreement with the magnitude of ESR signal intensity.

Notes: The relationship between the activity to initiate graft copolymerization under photo-irradiation and the photo-induced radicals of periodic acid-oxidized cellulose (aldehyde cellulose) was investigated. Aldehyde cellulose proved to have a high activity to initiate graft copolymerization under photo-irradiation, and the effect was profound, especially for hydrophilic vinyl monomers such as acrylic acid and acrylamide. By studying the ESR spectrum of photo-irradiated aldehyde cellulose, the formation of a radical giving a singlet spectrum with linewidth of 14-15 G and a g value of 2.001 was observed. This was assigned to an acyl radical orginating in the aldehyde group of the sample. Employing low molecular weight aldehydes, it was confirmed that an acyl radical formed on aldehyde compounds by photo-irradiation has a function sufficient to initiate the graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers. It was concluded that the high activity needed to induce the graft copolymerization of aldehyde cellulose under photo-irradiation was based on an acyl radical which originated in the aldehyde group of the sample.

Notes: Cellulose peroxides derived from hydrogen peroxide and cellulose derivative into which a ketone group is introduced by reaction with methyl vinyl ketone were investigated. The amount of peroxide formed on the cellulose substrate increased linearly with increasing carbonyl content of the sample, and sulfuric acid activated the formation of peroxide. The cellulose peroxide was gradually decomposed at 60°C in aqueous medium, and the decomposition was accelerated by addition of ferrous salt or irradiation with light of λ 〉 300nm. Grafting was initiated by adding methyl methacrylate to the thermal decomposition system under nitrogen. The formation, stability, thermal decomposition, and structure of the cellulose peroxide were discussed in comparison with one derived from aldehyde cellulose and hydrogen peroxide.

Notes: Factors affecting photografting (λ 〉 300 nm) of methacrylic acid on low-density polyethylene film were investigated in liquid-phase system with water. Benzophenone was used as a sensitizer by coating it on the film surface. Factors examined were monomer concentration (1.3 wt% to 10.0 wt%), polymerization temperature (30°C to 70°C), and film thickness (30 μm and 80 μm). It was found that grafted polymer is formed preferentially as compared with homopolymer under conditions such as monomer concentration higher than 6.0 wt%, polymerization temperature higher than 50°C, and film thickness of 30 μm. The structure of the grafted samples obtained in the above systems was characterized by the grafted chains distributing over the film and the flat appearance of film surface. In the grafting systems using the monomer concentration lower than 6.0 wt%, the polymerization temperature lower than 50°C, and the film thickness of 80 μm, homopolymer was formed predominantly. The resultant grafted chains localized mainly on the film surface, which appeared to be grainy.

Notes: Effects of water contained in the sample, the type of sensitizer, and the nature of vinyl monomer on vapor phase photografting on cellulose were investigated at 60°C. The grafting was enhanced by the water contained in the cellulose sample, resulting in an increased percent grafting with increasing the quantity of water. The use of sensitizers such as ferric chloride, ferrous sulfate, ceric ammonium nitrate, hydrogen peroxide, benzophenone, and sodium anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonate led to accelerated graftings. However, the maximum grafting was observed at an optimum quantity of sensitizer for each sensitized system, and the formation of grafted polymer was restricted by the use of sensitizer beyond the quantity. Ferric chloride and hydrogen peroxide exhibited higher activities among the sensitizers. With respect to the nature of monomer, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and acrylonitrile were observed to be introduced into cellulose substrate by the vapor phase photografting, though no initiation was recorded for styrene and N-vinylpyrrolidone. However, the latter monomers were introduced by using monomer mixtures with acrylonitrile, affording a maximum percent grafting at a certain monomer composition.
