Notes: Urease enzyme was immobilized in hydrogels prepared from vinyl pyrrolidone/water/crosslinking agent ternary mixtures by γ-irradiation of the solutions at room temperature. Two types of crosslinking agents used, namely ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and trimethylol propane triacrylate, yielded hydrogels with different swelling and crosslink density properties. The activity of immobilized urease was measured at the optimum conditions of temperature and pH over a period of time. It has been determined that for hydrogels with average molecular weights between crosslinks, Mc, above 2000, urease leakage is a serious problem. When Mc is around and below this value, immobilized systems showed a long time activity.

Notes: A viscosimetric method was used to investigate the molecular association in aqueous solutions of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), (PVP), of molecular weight 700 000. Limiting viscosity numbers [η] and Huggins constants kH of the polymer solutions were observed to decrease upon addition of denaturing agents such as thiourea and guanidinium sulfate. Guanidinium sulfate was found to be even more effective in its denaturing action as compared to urea and thiourea. The decrease in [η] and kH values increased with increasing concentrations of the denaturing agents. This behaviour was explained on the basis of the rupture of bridges formed by water molecules among different PVP chains, hydrogen bonding being responsible for these intermolecular associations. While no change in the [η] values was observed for PVP in 2 M thiourea solutions upon increasing the temperature from 25°C to 35 and 45°C, for the same increase in temperature the [η] values of aqueous PVP solutions showed substantial decreases. This is also attributed to the breaking of hydrogen bonds existing between PVP molecules.

Notes: Copolymers of allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) with acrylonitrile (AN) have been prepared by bulk polymerization of their monomers with gamma rays. Copolymers thus obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopic techniques. The composition of the copolymers is determined indirectly by FTIR, UV, and directly by elemental analysis. The results obtained by different methods are compared. The reactivity ratios of monomer pairs (AGE + AN) which copolymerized heterogeneously were calculated by using different methods of determination. Among the three experimental methods used for the analysis of compositions and two theoretical methods of computations, the elemental analysis technique and the application of nonlinear least-squares method gave the most reliable reactivity ratios. These are found to be 1.86 and 0.21 for acrylonitrile and allyl glycidyl ether, respectively. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Poly(glycidyl azide) (PGA) was synthesized by reaction of polyepichlorohydrin (PECH) with sodium azide (NaN3) by using phase-transfer catalysis. A detailed analysis was performed to follow the polymer-polymer conversion reaction. Conversion of —CH2—CL to — CH2 — N3 was achieved completely in 6 h, as determined from FTIR assignment, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. In FTIR and UV-VIS spectroscopy studies, the reaction was followed from the change in characteristic peak intensities. Thermal analysis also showed that the first thermal decomposition process of PGA, which is due to the exothermic clevage of pendant—N3 groups, was shifted to higher temperatures, and the exothermicity was increased as the conversion proceeded. It was also found that the extent and completion of—CL to—N3 conversion could be easily followed by measuring the glass transition temperature and exothermic decompostion of the polymers. The quantitative analysis of the data collected from FTIR and DSC measurements showed that PECH → PGA conversion is a first-order reaction with a rate constant of k = 0.74 h-1. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Acrylamide/itaconic acid (AAm/IA) hydrogels prepared by irradiating with γ radiation were used in experiments on uptake of some cationic dyes such as union green B (UG-B), basic blue 17 (BB-17), basic red 2 (BR-2), and lauths violet (LV). Adsorption of the cationic dyes onto AAm/IA hydrogels is studied by batch adsorption technique at 25°C. In the experiments of the adsorption, Langmiur type adsorption in the Giles classification system was found. Some binding and thermodynamic parameters for AAm/IA hydrogel-dye systems were calculated by using Klotz method. Adsorption studies indicated that monolayer coverages of AAm/IA hydrogel by these dyes were increased with following order BB-17 〉 UG-B 〉 BR-2 〉 LV. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
