    Notes: The curing of epoxy-amine polymer has been modeled by the reaction of functional groups, and the mole balance of these is governed by a set of six nonlinear differential equations. In this work, we have first developed a complete analytical solution for isothermal curing. For nonisothermal curing, we have divided the domain of hydroxyl group concentration β into small increments Δβ and adopted our analytical results for this domain. In addition, we solved the energy balance equation analytically and obtained the temperature rise for Δβ. We have compared our results with those obtained from the Runge Kutta numerical solutions. We have shown that our semianalytical technique is about a thousand times more efficient and faster.

    Notes: Validity of the compliance matching procedure has been examined for short fiber composites experimentally by studying the behavior of damaged specimens. Comparison between the behavior of damaged and fresh specimens shows that the load - COD (crack mouth opening displacement) curve and fracture load of a damaged specimen are different from that of a fresh specimen having a machined crack of length equal to the estimated crack length in the damaged specimen. However, it has been clearly established that the secondary compliance of the damaged specimen can be used to accurately estimate the extent of damage to the specimen by earlier loading. Therefore, the use of the compliance matching procedure is justified for estimating instantaneous crack length in short fiber composites.

    Notes: The positions and shapes of L2 X-ray absorption edges of Gd, Dy, Ho and Er have been studied in metals and in oxides and chlorides, using a forty centimetre benbt mica crystal spectrograph. It has been found that the L2 edge shifts towards the high energy side in the compounds and that the chemical shift ΔE depends on the degree of covalency involved. The white line structure at the edge has been analysed in terms of transitions of L2 shell electron to optical nd (n≥5) states.

    Notes: An exact strain-optic law for othotropic materials has been derived using Pockels' theory of crystalline photoelasticity. The law requires three experimentally determined photoelastic constants. Photoelastic response of materials such as glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy or polyester composites subjected to any state of strain can be predicted through this law. However, due to practical difficulties, this law is not sufficient to solve for principal strain differences or the direction of principal strain from conventional measurements in a polariscope. An approximate strain-optic law, which has been derived by minimizing square of the error between predictions of exact and approximate laws, can be employed to estimate the difference between principal strains and their directions. The error in using the approximate law appears to be small. The approximate strain-optic law has been found to be preferable over an approximate stress-optic law.

    Notes: The fracture behavior of glass-cloth-reinforced composites has been studied. Fracture of these composites proceeds by tensile failure of fibers rather than by the shear failure of the matrix or the interface. Although the spread of damage in these composites is restricted to small distances away from the crack path due to the interweaving of the fibers, this distance is found to be appreciably larger for the samples with smaller initial crack lengths. Characteristic distances associated with the Whitney-Nuismer criteria are, in turn, found to be smaller for these composites than for the angle ply laminates or randomly oriented short-fiber composites reported in literature in which the spread of the damage is much greater. Analysis through the crack growth resistance also supports this correlation with the extent of damage spread and indicates that the critical crack length for these composites may be equal to the best fit value of the characteristic distance of the average stress criterion.
