Notes: Avalanching of solids is an important multivariable dependent phenomenon that can be a valuable tool for characterization of solids flowability. Although avalanching by itself is primarily chaotic it appears that the fractal analysis of its avalanching mass data can yield very interesting and significant information that is of importance in determining suitability of a material in solids handling and pneumatic transport.

Notes: Static headspace analysis by gas chromatography has been found to be a suitable method for the analysis of organic solvents in printing inks. Experimental conditions for the analysis have been optimized, and the accuracy and relative standard deviation of the method has been determined. The solvent content of 29 printing inks has been measured.

Notes: A gas chromatographic (GC)-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method has been developed for the routine analysis of 11 fragrance substances in cosmetics: cinnamic alcohol, cinnamic aldehyde, eugenol, hydroxy citronellal, α-amyl cinnamic aldehyde, geraniol, isoeugenol, coumarin, dihydrocoumarin, citronellal and citral. Methods for sample preparation of various types of cosmetic products, prior to GC analysis, have also been developed and proved to be rugged. Detection limits of all of target fragrance substances were approximately 1 ppm. Calibration curves of the target fragrance substances analyzed by GC were found to be linear in the investigated concentration range, 0.005% - 0.50%. The recoveries of the target fragrances from various types of cosmetic products were 80% - 116% and the relative standard deviations of the quantitative analysis of the target fragrance substances were within 5%.

Notes: Ethylene oxide and propylene oxide have been copolymerized at low temperatures in the presence of anhydrous potassium hydroxide. The monomer reactivity ratios were found to be r(ethylene oxide) = 6.5 and r(propylene oxide) = 0.5.

Notes: A study of the low-energy collisional activation (CA) spectra of O- and N-epoxypropyltetrahydroacridines has revealed that the two isomers show characteristic differences in their spectra. The CA spectra of the M+ [M—H], MH+ [M + C2H5]+ and [M + C3H5]+ ions are discussed.

Notes: Solubilization of proteins from cereals, legumes, and oil seed cakes by alkali peptization and isoelectric precipitation is adversely affected if the source material is pretreated by ethanol or cooked under pressure. The degree of hydrolysis by trypsin of protein isolates obtained from unautoclaved materials is, however, considerably raised by heat treatment prior to enzymatic digestion.

Notes: A novel microreactor with a rapid direct quench system was developed to study fast hydrocarbon pyrolysis reactions. Heating of reactants inside the reactor was achieved by a Curie Point Pyrolyser. The propane pyrolysis reaction was studied at four different temperature levels: 600, 700, 800 and 900 °C. Pyrolysis times were varied from 0 to 2 s between 600 to 800°C and from 0 to 1 s at 900°C. The primary reaction products were methane, ethylene, hydrogen and propylene. Using a developed and very effective quench technique increased the production of olefins and reduced the formation of methane. A first-order kinetic analysis performed on the experimental data between 600 and 700°C yielded an activation energy of 216 kJ/mol, which is in the range of other researchers.

Notes: Since the intensity of an explosion increases substantially on damming or as a result of turbulence-generating obstacles, gas or dust explosions in industrial plant can cause considrable damage. In connection with various research projects, medium and largescale experimental studies on gas and dust explosions were undertaken in order to gain detailed information about the course and effects of explosions under realistic conditions and to assess possible means of improving safety precautions. Some typical experiments on expansion in dust explosions are presented on the basis of the measured explosive pressures and flame lenghts and compared with the calculated results obtained using the BASSIM CFD code developed by Battelle or by empirical modelling.
