Notes: Abstract The response of ‘Starking Delicious’ (Malus domestica Borkh.) apple trees to four N fertigation treatments in drip irrigation (50, 150, 250 and 400 kg N ha−1, supplemented with a uniform dose of 400 kg K ha−1) was investigated in a field experiment during 6 years. Nitrate nitrogen in the soil was proportional (7–58 mg kg−1) to the applied N dose at the end of a 6 week fertigation period in the spring. At other times, the nitrate concentration in the soil was very low. Soil K decreased with depth and in the 0–30 cm soil layer it was negatively correlated with the applied N dose, before fertigation started. At the end of the spring fertigation period, higher K was found in all soil layers analyzed. Vegetative growth was correlated positively with the amount of N applied. Leaf chlorophyll and N were significantly lower only in the lowest N treatment, while increased fruit size and decreased fruit color were measured only in the higher N treatments. Yield was severely biennial. In the ‘On’ years crop load was heavier as less N was applied. An extremely high crop load in the lowest N treatment was followed by a reduced flower density and yield in the following season. In the ‘Off’ years, a significantly higher yield was obtained with the 150 kg ha−1 dose. The dry weights, N, P and K contents of the above ground parts of mature apple trees were determined.

Notes: Experiments were performed to develop quantitative information for designing plasticating extruders for low density polyethylene. Screw design variables explored included feed section length, compression section taper, and minimum channel depth. Operating variables included were screw speed, barrel temperature, and back pressure. A moving picture film illustrates temperature action and cross-channel temperature distribution for some typical experiments using a new type of extruder screw for 2.5 inch and 8 inch diameter extrusion. The information gathered was used to obtain relations between performance and screw dimensions and revealed an optimum combination of feed section length and compression taper.

Notes: A study of the copolymerization of 3-methyl-1-pentene (3-MP) and 4-methyl-1-pentene (4-MP) showed that the poly-4-MP crystal lattice is capable of incorporating large quantities of 3-MP without a sharp lowering of melting point or adverse effect on physical and mechanical properties. The reactivity ratio of the two monomers in copolymerization are r(4-MP) = 6.2 ± 0.2 and r(3-MP) = 0.1 ± 0.1. As a result, mixed feeds containing up to 80% 3-MP produce copolymers composed primarily of repeating 4-MP units, with a random insertion of 3-MP monomer units. Calculations indicate that in a copolymer containing 37% 3-MP, the probability of finding a sequence of 2 units of 3-MP is only a little better than 5%. This copolymer shows a somewhat increased resistance to deformation under load than homopoly 4-MP. Its crystalline melting point is 248°C.

Notes: A study was made on the influence of sulphuric and chromic acid anodizing on the polymerization behavior of four primers (three based on epoxy resins and one on polyurethane) using IR and AES spectroscopy. AES spectroscopy has revealed that sulphur anions were incorporated in the anodic film, but no chromium anions could be detected. IR spectra for the primers on chromic acid anodic films are similar to those obtained on untreated aluminium, but a change of absorption peaks was observed for sulphuric acid anodic film substrate. Sulphuric acid anodizing has an adverse effect on the polymerization of the primers studied in this work.
