Notes: The synthesis and spectroscopic investigation of aza-crown ethers with anthraquinone- and 1-aminoanthraquinone-functionalized side chains are described. Cation-induced shifts in the UV/VIS absorption spectra of the ligands dissolved in propylene carbonate are observed only for Li+ among the alkali metal ions and for Mg2+ among the alkaline earth metal ions as well as for Ag+ and Tl+. Only hypsochromic shifts of the absorption spectra of anthraquinone-bearing aza-crown ethers are observed on protonation. The variations of the extinction coefficients are discussed with respect to the sequence of protonation of the different amino groups.

Notes: Reaction of the nitrone 1 with α-chloroacrylonitrile (4) as ketene equivalent yields the 5-isoxazolidinone 2a and the α-chloroimine 5. The mechanism of the reaction is discussed. The compound 2a is useful for the synthesis of hindered pyrrolidines 3.

Description / Table of Contents: Cycloadditions and Rearrangements During the Interaction of Hydrogen Bromide with AlkynesLiquid phase reactions of anhydrous hydrogen bromide with some alkynes were studied. In addition to products formed by conventional ionic and/or radical additions, 1-butyne (4a), 1-pentyne (4b), 1-hexyne (4c) and 3-cyclohexyl-1-propyne (4d) afforded in each case the corresponding cyclodimerization products 5 and/or 6 having 1,3-dialkyl-1,3-dibromocyclobutane structures. Under certain conditions 3,3-dimethyl-1-butyne (19) afforded 2,3-dibromo-2,3-dimethylbutane (28) and 1,3-dibromo-2,3-dimethylbutane (31). 2-Butyne (32) yielded four (33 - 36) of the five possible 1,3-dibromo-1,2,3,4-tetramethylcyclobutanes if HBr was used in excess, whereas the two stereo-isomeric 3-bromo-1,2,3,4-tetramethylcyclobutenes 38 and 39 were formed if a deficient amount of HBr was used.

Notes: The maximum wavelength of the solvatochromic absorption band of Dimroth-Reichardt's dye I, 2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium N-4-(2,6-diphenylphenoxide) betaine, has been determined at 25°C from the ultraviolet-visible spectra of solutions of this dye in ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and its mixtures with several polar solvents. The related molar transition energy, ET(30) in kcal/mol, of the long-wavelength absorption band increases sharply, when EAN is dissolved at low concentrations in the various solvents. The pronounced blue shift of the absorption band is attributed to the hydrogen-bond interaction between the ethylammonium cation and the ground state of the betaine molecule.
