    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a modeling attempt related to low-pressure plasma spraying processes which find increasing applications for materials processing. After a review of the various models for ionization and recombination processes, a two-temperature model for argon plasmas in chemical (ionization) nonequilibrium is established using finite rate chemistry. Results of sample calculations manifest departures from kinetic as well as chemical equilibrium, demonstrating that the conventional models based on the LTE (local thermodynamic equilibrium) assumption cannot provide proper prediction for low-pressure plasma jets.

    Notes: Poly(amic acids) (PAAs) were prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and diamines such as 2,2′-difluoro-, 3,3′-difluoro- and 2,2′-dichloro-4,4′-methylenedianiline. These PAAs form liquid crystals in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solution, in addition to the PMDA/4,4′-methylenedianiline (MDA) system reported previously. NMP was the only solvent in which liquid crystals were formed. The “liquid crystal” was shown to be a polymer crystallosolvate (PCS) of PAA and NMP. 1H NMR spectroscopy revealed that PAAs derived from PMDA contain isophthalamide and terephthalamide repeating units in nearly equal proportion, which varies slightly between samples prepared in NMP and dimethylacetamide (DMAc). WAXS showed that the PAA from PMDA/MDA is non-crystalline but forms a liquid crystalline state in NMP solution. The rate of crystallization is, however, vastly different between samples prepared in different solvents. This was attributed to their difference in chain conformation, which has to be an extended one for PCS formation. The morphologies of PCS are given, and limitations in PCS formation are discussed in terms of PAA structure and solvent.

    Notes: Three nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)-propionic acid (ibuprofen), 2-(3-benzoylphenyl)-propionic acid (ketoprofen), and 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-propionic acid (naproxen), were covalently linked with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The drug-linked HEMA (M1) (ibuprofen-linked HEMA abbreviated as HI; ketoprofen-linked HEMA as HK, and naproxen-linked HEMA as HN), were respectively copolymerized with methacrylic acid (M2), MA, to obtain macromolecular prodrugs. The compositions of the copolymers were determined by means of a 1H-NMR spectroscopy and monomer reactivity ratios were estimated using the Kelen-Tüdös linear differential equation. The reactivity ratios are: r1 = 0.101 ± 0.012, r2 = 1.071 ± 0.065 for HI-MA; r1 = 0.344 ± 0.066, r2 = 0.966 ± 0.032 for HN-MA, and r1 = 0.650 ± 0.182, r2 = 1.032 ± 0.106 for HK-MA, respectively. The monomer reactivity toward to MA radical estimated from 1/r2 values is almost same for all three monomers (1/r2 ∼ 1). The glass transition temperatures of three drug-linked homopolymers go hand in hand with the steric hindrance of three drugs, i.e., ketoprofen 〉 naproxen ≫ ibuprofen calculated the minimum energy by computer molecular modeling. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The photoinitiated polymerization of lauryl methacrylate with a pulsed excimer laser source is highly dependent on the laser repetition rate and the absorbance (optical density) of the photoinitiator. The GPC chromatograms of poly(lauryl methacrylate) generated by the laser-initiated polymerization of lauryl methacrylate decrease in size and shift to lower molecular weight species with increasing repetition rate. In addition, the polymers produced at high laser repetition rates are characterized by a number of distinct narrow molecular weight GPC peaks. The decrease in polymerization efficiency is especially pronounced at laser pulsing frequencies greater than 3 Hz.

    Notes: Acinetobacter has been found to be the major species responsible for mediating biological phosphate removal. The growth kinetics and phosphate uptake were investigated for an isolated Acinetobacter strain growing in a defined medium. The phosphate uptake is dependent on growth rate, temperature, and pH. Polyphosphate granules occurred in a balanced growth stage. The maximum phosphorus content in cells was 4.8% at the dilution rate of 12 day-1. The specific phosphate uptake rate was found to be a quadratic polynomial function of the dilution rate. Increased calcium (up to 36 mg/L) and magnesium (up to 15 mg/L), and the addition of yeast extract (100 mg/L), primary effluent (20%), and fluoride (10 mg/L) did not affect phosphate uptake. Anaerobic conditioning (N2 stripping), low pH (CO2 stripping), and addition of sodium acetate under anaerobic conditions failed to stimulate immediate phosphate release. Nevertheless, After 21-24 h, the phosphate release was ca. 3, 5, and 15 mg P/g cell, respectively, for N2 purging, the addition of acetate, and CO2 purging. For two-stage completely stirred reactor operation, there was negligible phosphate overplus at the second reactor when phosphate was added, when the first reactor was subjected to phosphate limitation. When both phosphate and carbon limited the growth in the first reactor, there was slight phosphate accumulation under endogenous respiration conditions in the second reactor.

    Description: The buckling of a truncated elastic conical shell subjected to an axial compression is a classical problem in shell structures. The paper reinvestigates the buckling of an axially compressed truncated conical shell with rigid bulkheads. Two improvements are achieved. First, the condition that the total horizontal displacement must vanish due to rigid bulkhead and axisymmetry is treated as a constraint. This constraint is incorporated into the system through the use of the Lagrange multiplier; then the variational method is used to derive a complete set of boundary conditions for conical shells. Second, the stability is evaluated in the deformed state using the asymptotic solutions of the pair of Donnell-type equations for axisymmetric configuration. The results indicate that the buckling strength of conical shells depends mainly on the condition of the smaller end. In addition to the vertex angle, the distance ratio plays, at least, an equally important role.
