    Description / Table of Contents: Thiolactic acid-S-carboxy anhydride (4-methyl-1.3-oxathiolan-2.5-dione, 3-thia-4-methylsuccinic acid anhydride, TMSCA) was synthesized to give a product of different degrees of optical purity (D93L7, D50L50, D29L71) and melting points of 46 (D50L50) and 62°C (D100 or L100). TMSCA polymerizes in the solid state (sublimation, precipitation). Primary and secondary amines as well as water initiate the polymerization of TMSCA, the polymerization rate being very low in dioxane solution. Tertiary amines do not act as initiators. Optically active amines initiate a steroeselective polymerization. D93L7-Polythiolactide exhibits no helix conformation in CHCl3 solution according to optical rotatory dispersion measurements. (-)-Dithiolactide was prepared by pyrolysis of polythiolactide and compared with the polymer.
    Notes: Thiomilchsäure-S-carbonsäureanhydrid (4-Methyl-1.3-oxathiolan-2.5-dion, 3-Thia-4-methylbernsteinsäureanhydrid, TMSCA) wurde mit verschiedenen optischen Reinheitsgraden (D93L7, D50L50, D29L71) synthetisiert. Racemisches TMSCA besitzt einen Schmelzpunkt von 46°C, optisch reines (D- oder L-)TMSCA einen von 62°C. TMSCA polymerisiert im festen Zustand (Sublimation, Umfällen). Primäre und sekundäre Amine sowie Wasser sind Polymerisationsinitiatoren; die Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeit ist aber in Dioxan-Lösung sehr gering. Tertiäre Amine initiieren nicht. Optisch aktive Amine induzieren eine stereoselektive Polymerisation. D93L7-Polythiolactid weist nach Messungen der optischen Rotationsdispersion in Chloroform keine Helixstruktur auf. (-)-Dithiolactid wurde zu Vergleichsmessungen durch Pyrolyse von Polythiolactid synthetisiert.

    Notes: This paper discusses various new aspects in the elasticity of rubbers and the statistics of elastomers. It is shown that the role of network topology is crucial in the statistics of rubbers. This is seen mostly on the influence of heterogeneities of crosslink density, which is also of practical interest. Strong heterogeneities lower the modulus, but do not change the stress-strain behavior. It is also shown that if in a given network the flexible chains are replaced by rigid rods which are flexibly hinged the entropy is still of order of that of the flexible network and that the modulus is of the same order as the Gaussian one. This holds for lower functionalities, i.e. less than six. The phase behavior of crosslinked blends and interpenetrating networks is shown to be similar of the microphase transition of block copolymers. Semi IPNs demix at a critical crosslink density of the crosslinked part, or alternatively at a critical length of the free chains, even though if the chains are of the same chemical nature as the crosslink component.

    Description / Table of Contents: The current statistical theories of polymer networks and their success in explaining the mechanical network properties are reviewed. A more exhaustive elucidation of the structure-property relationship of networks in polymers relating to the rubber-elastic state can be achieved by considering topological constraints in the description of the statistical mechanics of networks.
    Notes: In einer Übersicht werden statistisch-mechanische Theorien polymerer Netzwerke diskutiert und ihre Leistungsfähigkeit zur Erklärung der mechanischen Eigenschaften der Netzwerke untersucht. Es zeigt sich, daß ein tieferes Verständnis der Struktur-Eigenschafts-Korrelation polymer Netzwerke im kautschukelastischen Zustand möglich ist, wenn bei der Formulierung einer statistischen Mechanik der Netzwerke die Undurchdringbarkeit der Netzwerkketten berücksichtigt wird.

    Description / Table of Contents: In der Arbeit wird ein neues Modell zur Simulierung der topologischen Behinderungen in polymeren Netzwerken vorgestellt. Das Behinderungspotential und dessen Deformationsabhängigkeit werden über die freie Energie der behindernden Ketten des Netzwerkes in Abhängigkeit von der jeweiligen Lage einer betrachteten behinderten Kette berechnet. Dabei lassen sich die Konfigurationseinschränkungen der behindernden Ketten in selbstkonsistenter. Weise berücksichtigen. Größe und Deformationsabhängigkeit eines als Maß für die Stärke der topologischen Behinderungen gewählten Behinderungskanalradius werden berechnet und mit experimentellen Untersuchungen verglichen. Die Konsequenzen hinsichtlich der Beschreibung von Spannungs-Dehnungs-Experimenten werden diskutiert.
    Notes: The paper deals with a new model for simulating the topological constraints in polymer networks. The constraining potential and its deformation dependence were calculated via the free energy of the constraining chains in dependence on the displacement of the constrained segments. The configurational restrictions of the constraining chains will be taken into account in a self-consistent manner. Calculated values of the order and the deformation dependence of the tube radius as a measure of the strength of topological constraints will be compared with experimental investigations. Consequences concerning stress-strain experiments on elastomeric networks are discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: The stress-strain behaviour of a series of vulcanized products with polybutadiene as the rubber component and sulfur as the crosslinking agent, in the absence and presence of different amounts of carbon black has been studied. Defined correlations were found between the content of carbon black and the measured reinforcement. This dependence can be described with good agreement by a network model, considering phantom chains connected through the conventional chemical junction points (the sulfur bridges between the primary molecules) and additionally through an ensemble of highly dispersed multifunctional filler domains. It is necessary to reconsider the concept that reinforcement of such rubber mixtures after crosslinking is due to physical interactions alone.
    Notes: Das Spannungs-Dehnungs-Verhalten einer Serie von vulkanisierten Proben mit Polybutadien als Kautschukkomponente und Schwefel als Vernetzungsagens wurde in Abwesenheit und Gegenwart unterschiedlicher Gehalte an Ruß untersucht. Dabei wurden eindeutige Korrelationen zwischen dem Gehalt an Ruß und der gemessenen Verstärkung gefunden. Diese Abhängigkeit läßt sich am besten mit einem Netzwerkmdell beschreiben, das von Phantomketten ausgeht, die über die konventionellen chemischen Vernetzungsstellen (Schwefelbrüchen zwischen den Primärmolekülen) und zusätzlich chemisch über hochdisperse multifunktionelle, räumlich ausgedehnte Füllstoffdomänen verknüpft sind. Das Konzept der weitestgehend nur physikalischen Verstärkung bei derartigen Kautschukmischungen auch nach der Vernetzung ist damit neu zu überdenken.
