    Notizen: Fiber glass reinforced polyester parts compression molded from sheet molding compound (SMC) are prone to such surface inconsistencies as porosity and sinks. Even though it appears that some of these defects could be eliminated by techniques such as vacuum molding, the resulting surface, with current technology, is not yet consistently up to automotive standards for exterior body panels. In-mold coating (IMC) of SMC, is designed to fill porosity, reduce sinks, and furnish a primer-like coating, thus upgrading the part surface to automotive standards. As a consequence, IMC is generally an integral part of the molding cycle when producing compression molded SMC exterior automotive body panels. Most commonly, in-mold coating is injected after opening the press slightly so as to separate the mold cavity and the exterior surface of the part to make room for the coating. A second approach is to let the hydraulic pressure of the injected IMC open the mold. Here, we present a mathematical model of the process and show application in predicting injection pressures, fill times, and filling patterns. A comparison with experimental results is also presented. Cycle times required for IMC injection methods is also discussed.

    Notizen: Polyacrylonitrile can be compression-molded with conventional equipment if the inherent polymer particle structure is modified. With normal polymerization methods, a circumferential orientation in the polymer particle is obtained. This structure can be changed under the effects of shear to yield highly ordered, laminar particles with planar orientations. In this form, PAN can be compression-molded into tough, clear, chemically resistant articles with retention of the laminar structure. The polymer has been characterized by its x-ray diffraction and infrared spectrum which, in combination, distinguish it from previously observed forms of PAN.

    Notizen: Most available descriptions of sheet molding compound (SMC) flow are based on a generalized Hele-Shaw type model. These analyses have several deficiencies. SMC slip at the wall is neglected, and unrealistic rheological models are used. Consequently, molding pressures are incorrectly predicted but, nonetheless, the fill patterns for thin, large area charges typical of exterior automotive body panels are reasonably well predicted as is shown here by comparison with experiment. Recently, a model has been developed that allows for slip at the wall and assumes extensional resistance controls in the interior of the SMC. The model contains the Hele-Shaw approximation as an extreme case. The predicted molding forces during fill are compared with experiment for some commercial moldings. A dimensionless group to predict when the Hele-Shaw type models fail in predicting the charge shape is developed and its applicability demonstrated.

    Notizen: Cultured hepatocytes typically form multicellular aggregates which are either monolayered or spheroidal in morphology. We propose that the aggregate morphology resulting from a particular cell-substratum interaction has a biophysical basis: when cell contractile forces are greater than cell-substratum adhesion forces, spheroidal aggregates form; when cell contractile forces are weaker than cell-substratum adhesion forces, cells remain essentially spread and form monolayered aggregates. We tested this hypothesis by systematically varying the morphology of hepatocellular aggregates formed on substrata coated with a series of different concentrations of Matrigel, and correlating aggregate morphology with the cell-substratum adhesion strength measured in a shear flow detachment assay. Aggregate morphology was binary - spheroidal aggregates formed at low Matrigel concentrations and monolayered aggregates formed at high Matrigel concentrations. Cell-substratum adhesion strength was similarly binary, with low adhesion strengths correlated with spheroidal aggregates and high adhesion strengths correlated with formation of monolayered aggregates. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notizen: Aggregation of hepatocytes in culture is an important phenomenon to control in tissue engineering applications. Aggregation generally enhances maintenance of differentiated functions but inhibits cell growth. At present there exists insufficient information for rational design of substrata that control aggregation. Indeed, the cellular mechanism(s) underlying the aggregation process is poorly understood, although cell motility is generally considered to be an essential phenomenon. In this article we provide the first study investigating the relationship between hepatocyte aggregation and motility behavior on various extracellular matrix substrata, including Matrigel, laminin, and fibronectin. We find that the extent of aggregation depends on the concentration of the extracellular matrix proteins, as well as on the type. Furthermore, we find that the extent of aggregation appears to be independent of classical single-cell locomotion. In fact, under conditions giving rise to substantial aggregation, the fraction of cells exhibiting classical locomotion is essentially negligible. Instead, aggregation appears to involve intracellular contacts accomplished via a different form of cell motility: active cell membrane extensions followed by adhesive cell-cell interactions. An implication of these findings is that aggregation may be largely governed by relative strengths of cell-cell versus cell-substratum interactions. These observations could be helpful for improved design of cell transplantation devices and cell culture substrata. © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: An experimental study has been carried out on rubber I transfer molding. It reveals that the filling is frequently limited more by the resistance of flow across the transfer pot than by resistance of flow through the sprue holes into the cavities. A mathematical model has been derived, which predicts semi-quantitatively the molding behavior observed. The mode1 predicts that fill time is proportional to the ratio of compound viscosity divided by molding pressure raised to about the fourth power. For the common cases where most of the fill time is from the resistance to the transverse flow on the top of the sprue plate, the fill time is proportional to about the fifth power of the ratio of transverse distance divided by the charge thickness. Experimental results showed that preheating and mastication of the compound reduced transfer time substantially. The charge pattern did not seem to have a major influence on transfer time.

    Notizen: Dimensional changes in complex profile extrusions are classified as overall size and local shape changes which can be related naturally and systematically to changes in operating conditions. The theoretical basis and supporting experimental data for simultaneous, independent control of certain classes of extrudate dimensions are presented for the following strategies: (1) size control by manipulating line speed relative to extruder output rate, (2) shape control by manipulating extrudate swell through adjustments in stock temperature, and (3) shape control by manipulating local die flow by adjusting the die temperature set point.
