Notes: Abstract. Intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH) increases trabecular bone mass in vivo by stimulating bone formation. To further characterize the cellular and molecular mediators of the anabolic response to PTH, we examined the effect of intermittent synthetic hPTH 1-34 on the expression and localization of selected early response genes, c-fos, c-jun, c-myc, and IL-6 protein, in bone tissue by immunohistochemistry. Young male Sprague-Dawley rats, 70–100 g, were injected s.c. with 8 μg/100 g PTH or vehicle control, once daily for 5 days. Femurs were harvested 1 and 24 hours after the fifth injection, then fixed, decalcified, processed for wax embedding, and sections were immunostained. Early response genes, c-fos, c-jun and IL-6, were strongly expressed in osteoblasts, osteocytes, and megakaryocytes in bones 1 hour after PTH, when compared with vehicle-treated controls or sections from rats, 24 hours after PTH injection. Osteoblasts, osteocytes, and megakaryocytes were also positive for c-myc but the differences in stain intensity between control and treated groups were marginal. Also, scattered islands of hematopoietic cells in the marrow stained intensely for IL-6 by 1 hour after PTH, but the stain intensity decreased to control level 24 hours after the last PTH injection. Scattered islands of hematopoietic cells in the bone marrow stained more strongly for c-fos than either c-jun or c-myc, but neither localization nor stain intensity were regulated by PTH at the time points examined. We conclude that during the immediate early phase of the anabolic response, PTH regulates c-fos, c-jun, and IL-6 expression in osteoblasts, osteocytes, megakaryocytes, and selected bone marrow hematopoietic cells in bone.

Notes: Abstract: This paper presents a text block extraction algorithm that takes as its input a set of text lines of a given document, and partitions the text lines into a set of text blocks, where each text block is associated with a set of homogeneous formatting attributes, e.g. text-alignment, indentation. The text block extraction algorithm described in this paper is probability based. We adopt an engineering approach to systematically characterising the text block structures based on a large document image database, and develop statistical methods to extract the text block structures from the image. All the probabilities are estimated from an extensive training set of various kinds of measurements among the text lines, and among the text blocks in the training data set. The off-line probabilities estimated in the training then drive all decisions in the on-line text block extraction. An iterative, relaxation-like method is used to find the partitioning solution that maximizes the joint probability. To evaluate the performance of our text block extraction algorithm, we used a three-fold validation method and developed a quantitative performance measure. The algorithm was evaluated on the UW-III database of some 1600 scanned document image pages. The text block extraction algorithm identifies and segments 91% of text blocks correctly.

Notes: The vacuum-uv CD of agarose solid films has been measured to 145 nm and shows a positive band near 180 nm and a larger negative band at around 152 nm. The positive band remains accessible in aqueous solution and has been used to characterize changes in molecular conformation and interaction during the sol-gel transition. The temperature profile of vacuum-uv CD shows sharp, discontinuous changes around the melting and setting points of the gel, which are interpreted in terms of cooperative intermolecular association through double helices, and pronounced hysteresis, which is discussed in terms of helix-helix aggregation.

Notes: The influence of temperature and shear rate on the flow behavior of high density polyethylene (HDPE) melts during extrusion has been investigated by using a Ceast Rheovis 2100 capillary rheometer which was manufactured by the Ceast Co. in Italy. It was found that the entry pressure drop for the samples was very low during extrusion, the relationship between shear stress and shear rate did not obey the power law strictly, and the phenomenon of shear-induced crystallization was easily produced when temperature was near the melting point of the samples, even though the shear rate was not high. The dependence of the shear viscosity for the samples on temperature can be described by using the Arrhenius equation. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: Nanostructured materials have shown extraordinary promise for electrochemical energy storage but are usually limited to electrodes with rather low mass loading (~1 milligram per square centimeter) because of the increasing ion diffusion limitations in thicker electrodes. We report the design of a three-dimensional (3D) holey-graphene/niobia (Nb 2 O 5 ) composite for ultrahigh-rate energy storage at practical levels of mass loading (〉10 milligrams per square centimeter). The highly interconnected graphene network in the 3D architecture provides excellent electron transport properties, and its hierarchical porous structure facilitates rapid ion transport. By systematically tailoring the porosity in the holey graphene backbone, charge transport in the composite architecture is optimized to deliver high areal capacity and high-rate capability at high mass loading, which represents a critical step forward toward practical applications.
