Notes: Abstract Picea sitchensis and Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings were grown in containers, inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi, and planted in British forestry sites. Root samples taken during the year after planting were assessed for mycorrhiza formation. Survival and shoot height were assessed at the end of each year. Observations were made each autumn on the occurrence of sporophores of ectomycorrhizal fungi. Pot experiments were used to assess the colonization potential of soils from the experimental locations. Assessment of mycorrhiza formation by the inoculant fungi both before planting and the following year showed much variation among the fungi used. Similar variation was found among field sites. Inoculation with Laccaria isolates was most successful. Height measurements are reported for the first 2 years after planting, at which time there were few significant effects on growth of Picea sitchensis or Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings. Experimental assessment of colonization potential was of little value in this work for predicting events in the forest.

Notes: Molecular weight studies of polyamic acids are complicated by polyelectrolyte effects. Although early work on the molecular weight determination of polyamic acids employed salts to suppress this polyelectrolyte effect, recent publications reveal that such salts can cause precipitation of polyamic acids from solution, however, a mobile phase consisting of 0.03M LiBr/0.03M H3PO4/1% vol THF in dimethyl formamide was reported to successfully suppress the noted polyelectrolyte effect without causing the precipitation of polyamic acid and give satisfactory size exclusion chromatograms using columns packed with “macro-porous” glasses. However, the development time was long (ca. 4 h) and considering the lability of the polyamic acids, the results must be viewed with skepticism. We find that use of a similar “mixed” mobile phase with Zorbax® PSM-Bimodal columns using size exclusion chromatography in the high performance mode (HPSEC) provides well resolved and reproducible chromatograms and molecular weight data with development times of 〈 15 min. Aside from the avoidance of long development times, which can lead to questionable results, this procedure permits the facile routine analysis of polyamic acid on a daily basis. The procedure has great utility as an analytical tool to support fundamental studies of polyamic acid chemistry and two examples of this application are given.

Notes: A new method for measuring isothermal rates of heterogeneously catalyzed gas reactions is described. The method involves a differential reactor incorporated in a recycling system and affords ease of control, accuracy, and many rate measurements in one run.The results for the reaction system investigated show that four reactions are important: the dehydration of ethanol to ethylene, the reaction of ethanol to form diethyl ether, the dehydration of diethyl ether to ethylene, and the reaction of diethyl ether to form ethanol. It is also shown that the rate controlling steps are the monomolecular surface reactions for the two dehydrations and for the formation of ethanol from diethyl ether, and the bimolecular surface reaction for the formation of diethyl ether from ethanol. The values and the temperature dependence of all pertinent rate and adsorption constants are determined and reported, and they are shown to correlate very well the data up to 80% conversion.

Notes: Polymers from tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) or tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine (THP) with ammonia show similar thermal degradation, but appear to be of different chemical structure. Solution reaction of THPC with urea or melamine or by solid-phase reaction with urea gives products ranging from water-soluble liquids to hard, brittle, insoluble polymers. Reaction of THPC with piperazine yields products of low thermal stability.

Notes: In this study, neural networks have been used to classify the clusters in a scatter diagram formed from images in a multispectral set. The use of multispectral images in surface and materials science has been applied to a number of techniques in recent years. The use of neural networks to analyse multispectral Landsat images of the Earth has already been reported, but has not yet been applied in other fields employing multispectral images. The work reported here used two different neural networks: a three-layer neural net with back propagation and a self-organizing map. The results suggest that neural nets can provide a useful addition to the current multispectral analysis procedures in materials and surface science.
