    Notes: Abstract The Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals produced in the course of biological oxidations. When placed under the control of the rat SOD1 gene promoter and transfected into human HepG2 hepatoma cells, the activity of a chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter gene was found to increase three- to four-fold in the presence of heavy metals (cadmium, zinc and copper). Functional analysis of mutant derivatives of the SOD1 gene promoter and the use of a heterologous promoter system confirmed that the induction of the SOD1 gene by metal ions requires a metal-responsive element (MRE) located between positions −273 and −267 (GCGCGCA). It was also shown by gel mobility shift assays that an MRE binding protein is induced by the exposure of the human liver cell line HepG2 to heavy metals. These results suggest that the MRE participates in the induction of the SOD1 gene by heavy metals.

    Notes: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of titanate coupling agents on the rheological properties of p articulate-filled polyolefin melts. Inorganic fillers used were CaCO3, talc, and fiberglass, and polyolefins used were high-density polyethylene (HOPE) and polypropylene (PP). It was found that the addition of the coupling agent TTS to the PP-CaCO3 and PP-fiberglass systems reduced the melt viscosity considerably, whereas the addition of the coupling agent ETDS-201 to the PP-talc and HDPE-talc systems affected the melt viscosity very little. Also carried out was an injection molding study to investigate the effects of different inorganic fillers and the titanate coupling agents used on the mechanical properties of the injection molded specimens. It was found that addition of titanate coupling agents generally resulted in reduced modulus and tensile strength, and increased elongation and impact strength of the filled systems. The PP-CaCO3-TTS and HDPE-talc-ETDS 201 systems were found to have impact strength improved by approximately 100 percent with the addition of a titanate coupling agent. The PP-CaCO3-TTS samples have ultimate tensile elongation approaching that of virgin PP.

    Notes: An attempt is made to gain better physical insight on the draw resonance phenomenon occurring during melt spinning of polypropylene (PP). An experimental study is first carried ouit to determine effects of spinning variables and material parameters on draw resonance, using two PRO-FAX PP resins and one PRO-FAX/LDPE blend. Based on the experimental observations, our view on the cause of draw resonance is presented. With this new concept, we are able to explain various aspects of the draw resonance phenomenon observed experimentally during melt spinning of PRO-FAX PP resins. It is concluded that the extensional viscosity versus strain relationship, as determined by an extensional rheometer, is one of the most valuable rheological measurements in analyzing flow instability occurring during polymer processing operations that utilize extensional flows.
