Notes: Craze initiation in amorphous thermoplastics can be regarded as a transition from the safe to the unsafe state and, as such, can constitute a rational engineering design limit. A critical appraisal is made of three different criteria for initiation, which are of current interest. From this, it is concluded that the approach presented in this article, which is based upon the concept of inelastic strain, is to be preferred to the two other criteria, which are based upon an asymptotic total strain or constant inelastic strain energy criterion. The inelastic strain criterion is not only capable of modeling high stress/strain crazing in air but also satisfies the case of low stress/strain crazing in solvents. Furthermore, it offers an accurate method of extrapolating data to long times and, thus, satisfies a fundamental requirement for a parameter that can be used in engineering design.

Notes: Data from earlier investigation of Au-Cu-Ag ternary alloys indicate that there may be a relationship between an alloy's corrosion behavior and its biological effects. Corrosion properties were determined using standard potentio dynamic techniques and the biological effect was assessed as cytotoxicity in vitro. Linear mathematical methods were used to analyze the data and model the systems. A direct correlation was found between corrosion properties and cytotoxic response.

Description: Satellite instruments such as the backscattered ultraviolet (BUV) apparatus, have been in operation for a number of years. One current difficulty is the validation of the ozone inferences obtained from the BUV measurements using independent instruments. For higher altitudes rocket instruments are necessary. Two instruments currently under development include a chemiluminescent detector described by Hilsenrath et al. (1969) and a filter photometer rocket ozonesonde (Rocoz) developed by Krueger and McBridge (1968). The present investigation is concerned with an analysis of the Rocoz system, the information content of the measurements, and the utility of the system for intercomparison with the BUV system. It is found that the sampling characteristics of the Rocoz and BUV systems exhibit some fundamental differences. However, their results can be related through knowledge of the relation between pressure and altitude. This is best obtained through the solution of the hypsometric equation using rocket temperature measurements.

Description: Reciprocity failure was examined for IIaO spectroscopic film. The results indicate reciprocity failure occurs at three distinct minimum points in time; 15 min, 30 min and 90 min. The results are unique because theory suggests only one minimum reciprocity failure point should occur. When incubating 70mm IIaO film for 15 and 30 min at temperatures of 30, 40, 50, and 60 C and then placing in a liquid nitrogen bath at a temperature of -190 C the film demonstrated an increase of the optical density when developed at a warm-up time of 30 min. Longer warm-up periods of 1, 2 and 3 hrs yield a decrease in optical density of the darker wedge patterns; whereas, shorter warm-up times yield an overall increase in the optical densities.
