Notes: Bromodifluoroacetaldehyde (5) was prepared from methyl bromodifluoroacetate (4) by reduction with lithium aluminium hydride. 4 was in turn prepared by bromination of chlorotrifluoroethylene (1) and treatment of the resulting 1,2-dibromo-1-chlorotrifluoroethane (2) with fuming H2SO4 and HgO. 5, properly purified, could be polymerized with anionic and cationic initiators to poly[oxy-2-(bromodifluoro)ethylidene] (12). Certain initiators produce partially or entirely amorphous soluble 12 of relatively low molecular weight. Most polymers, however, are insoluble, crystalline, and presumably isotactic. Thermal vacuum degradation of the polymers 12 gave monomer 5 in essentially quantitative yield. The thermal stability of polymers can significantly be improved by endcapping or treating with agents which replace unstable end groups. The ceiling temperature of the polymerization of 5 was determined to be +48°C. 5 was copolymerized with trichloroacetaldehyde with cationic or anionic initiators to copolymers containing predominantly units of 5. 5 could also be copolymerized with phenyl isocyanate to a polymer containing oxycarbamido linkages.

Notes: Nitric acid digestion studies of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers indicated that copolymers containing identical amounts of vinyl acetate but varying in melt index differed in crystallinity. These results were confirmed by x-ray analysis. The differences in crystallinity were interpreted as showing a variation in the degree of short-chain branching in the polyethylene segments of the copolymer chain. This variation was correlated with the conditions of synthesis.

Description / Table of Contents: A wolfram wire is glowing in an inert gas of atmospheric pressure, containing very small concentrations of oxygen (N2 + O2; CO + CO2). The temperatures of the wire are 1500-3500°K. All the observations, that means the inversion of the transport direction of W in a temperature gradient at about 2800°K, the sharp decrease of W-“vaporization” below 1600°K and the approximate amount of W-vaporization can be understood if one assumes a thermodynamic equilibrium with species O1, O2, W1, WO2, WO3, W3O9, W4O12 on the surface of the wire.

Notes: The quasi-static compaction behavior of a number of single- and double-base ball propellants has been investigated to determine the effect of nitroglycerin (NG) content. Simultaneous measurements were obtained of axial applied and transmitted forces, circumferential strain, and porous bed displacement, resulting in the calculation of axial average solid stress and radial stress as a function of porous bed consolidation. Five Olin ball propellants designated as WC140, TS3660, TS3659, Winchester #231, and TS3661 in order of increasing NG content, were compacted. Their NG concentrations ranged from 0 to ∼35 wt%. The most significant effects of increased NG content were to decrease the various axial and radial stress levels present at constant degree of bed consolidation and to increase the coefficient of kinetic friction at the porous bed/mold wall interface. Microscopic examination of recovered samples that had been compacted revealed that extensive plastic deformation occurred in the absence of particle fracture.

Description: A system for remotely measuring velocities present in discrete volumes of air is described. A CO2 laser beam is focused by a telescope at such a volume, a focal volume, and within the focusable range, near field, of the telescope. The back scatter, or reflected light, principally from the focal volume, passes back through the telescope and is frequency compared with the original frequency of the laser, and the difference frequency or frequencies represent particle velocities in that focal volume.

Description: A pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) technique is developed to reject the beta-decay background resulting from activation of Ge gamma-ray detectors by cosmic-ray secondaries. These beta decays are a major source of background at 0.2-2 MeV energies in well shielded Ge detector systems. The technique exploits the difference between the detected current pulse shapes of single- and multiple-site energy depositions within the detector: beta decays are primarily single-site events, while photons at these energies typically Compton scatter before being photoelectrically absorbed to produce multiple-site events. Depending upon the amount of background due to sources other than beta decay, PSD can more than double the detector sensitivity.
