Notes: Abstract  A sample of 36 flower traits consisting of six morphological categories in the Davis population of gerbera was restructured into phenotypic and genetic principal component traits. The first 5 phenotypic principal component traits accounted for 62% of the total phenotypic variance of the 36 traits and have moderate to high heritablities. The first 5 genetic principal component traits account for 97% of total genetic variance and all have high heritability. Morphological structure of these component traits suggest an underlying process identified by the first genetic principal component involving largely trans and disk floret traits. The results of this study indicate that the quantitative genetic structure of the gerbera flower is controlled by a few independent components and that principal component analysis is a useful tool to reveal variation in this structure. These composite traits are heritable and are expected to respond to selection.

Notes: Summary Phenotypic (r p ), genetic (r g ), and environmental, (r e ) correlations were estimated for 38 flower traits in the Davis population of gerbera (Gerbera hybrida, Compositae). Fifty-two percent of r p and 38% of r g were statistically significant at P 〈 0.05. Significant negative r p were infrequent, but significant negative r g occurred in 10% of cases. There was a negative correlation between estimates of r g and r e , resulting in cases where r g was significant, but r p was not. Individual traits varied in their tendency to correlate phenotypically or genetically, and positively or negatively, with other traits. Traits within the same morphological category, such as disk florets or transitional florets, were more highly intercorrelated than were traits from different categories.

Notes: Summary Estimates of additive, dominance, maternal, and paternal components of variance were obtained for a sample of 18 traits, including measurements of yield, scapes, flowers, disk, ray and trans florets, leaves, and branching in the Davis population of Gerbera hybrida. The results, based on the covariance of reciprocals, indicate that although heritability averaged 0.52, extranuclear maternal or paternal effects are not important sources of variability. Therefore, reciprocal differences do not seriously affect estimates of additive variance or heritability in this population.

Notes: The characteristic flavor of hard Italian cheeses is associated with the presence of fatty acids, particularly butyric acid, liberated from milk fat during the ripening process. To ensure proper development and control of flavor, animal pregastric esterases or lipases are routinely added to the milk before coagulation of the curd. Such esterases are also used to generate flavor in enzyme modified cheese and other dairy products.Esterases from microbial sources have been investigated as agents to enhance flavor in cheese. We have found that an esterase from Mucor miehei exhibits the type of lipolytic activity needed for this application. Romano and fontina cheeses of excellent quality have been prepared by the use of this esterase. It has also been used successfully in the preparation of enzyme modified cheese, and, in turn, processed American cheese.

Notes: A series of block copolymers from D,L-lactide and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weight were synthesized by using Al(i-Bu)3—H3PO4—H2O as the initiator and identified by 1H-NMR, GPC, and DSC. The elongation at break of the material increased when PEG was introduced, but the strength of the material decreased. The copolymers degrade more smoothly in vitro than did the PLA homopolymer. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In situ conductivity measurements on the low band-gap polymer, poly-4-dicyanomethylene-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4,b′]dithiophene have provided both p- and n-type conductivities as a function of the potential. A minimum in the conductivity, at a potential between the formal potentials for p- and n-doping, yields an intrinsic conductivity of 1.0 × 10-8 S cm-1, consistent with the optical band-gap of ∼0.8 eV.
