    Notes: Investigations on the Photoconductivity of Alkoxy Substituted Oligo- and Poly(1,4-phenyleneethenylene)sThe photoreactivity and the photoconductivity of the mono- and dialkoxy substituted oligo- and poly(1,4-phenyleneethenylene)s 1/1′a-n were investigated in order to optimize the photoconducting properties of these materials. Increasing the length of the side chains enhances the average length of the main chain during the polycondensation and decreases the band gap till the limit of convergence is reached. The highest photoconductivity was observed for the 2,5-dipropyloxy system 1/1′j. Longer side chains render the charge transfer from chain to chain more difficult. The measurements were performed in dispersion layers and related to the industrial standard 3. Compound 1m was also measured in a pure state as transparent film and compared to a poly(N-vinylcarbazole) film which shows a dye-sensitized photoconductivity. In both cases the optimized systems 1/1′ were markedly superior to the standards. The highest sensitivity could be observed for wavelengths λ lying close to the absorption maxima λmax. The compounds 1/1′ have a high photostability on irradiation with visible light; however, they are rapidly destroyed by UV light (254 nm).

    Description / Table of Contents: A new approach towards the early recognition of H-induced stress corrosion crackingThe investigation show that diffusion of hydrogen into ferritic stedel leads to changes in the micromagnetic measured values. This can be explained by the interaction of the magnetic structure with locally occuring fields of residual stress. In principle an early recognition of H-induced stress corrosion cracking is thus possible.
    Notes: Die durchgeführten Untersuchungen haben gezeigt. daß die Eindiffusion von Wasserstoff zu Veränderungen der mikromagnetischen Prüfgrößen führt. Dies läßt rich durch die Wechselwirkung magnetischen Struktur mit sich verändernden lokalen Eigenspannungsfeldern erklären. Damit ist prinzipiell eine frühzeitige Erkennung wasserstoffinduzierter Spannungsrißkorrosion vor der Rißentstehung möglich.

    Notes: Synthesis of 2-Alkoxy Substituted Oligo- and Poly(1,4-phenyleneethylene)s and 2-Arylbenzo[b]furanes by Applying the Siegrist ReactionAlkylation of 2-hydroxy-4-methylbenzaldehyde (1) yields the 2-alkoxy-4-methylbenzaldehydes (2a-l) which can be easily transformed to the Schiff bases 3a-l. The intermolecular self-condensation in a strongly alkaline medium leads to the oligo- and poly(1,4-phenyleneethenylene)s (4a-i) with an outstanding regular constitution and overall (E)-configuration. The terminal N-arylamino group can be cleaved by hydrolysis generating the compounds 5a-i. An intramolecular condensation forming the benzo[b]furanes 6j,k is observed for 3j,k - due to the activated OCH2 group in 2-position. Finally, both the 4-CH3 as well as the 2-OCH2 group take part in the reaction of 3l. The twofold Schiff base 3m, obtained from 1 via 2m, yields the ladder polymer 7m.

    Notes: The structure of epitaxially grown ultra-thin gold films is investigated by x-ray diffraction, texture analysis and LEED/Auger techniques. High sensitivity of the x-ray diffraction analyzer has been achieved by means of a step scanning unit and an impulse height discriminator. The resolving power is then sufficient for the detection of the reflections of films as thin as 1 nm. It is concluded that the particle size broadening is the limiting factor for a further extension of the investigation range towards smaller thicknesses.

Die Röntgenuntersuchungen ergeben für die Skelettkontakte, daß es sich um α-Eisenoxyde handelt, die eine unregelmäßige (wärmeschwingungsähnliche) Gitterstörung unter statistischer Verlagerung der Atome (Gitteraufrauhung) und eine geringe Teilchengröße besitzen. Durch Tempern und chemische Alterung ist es möglich, die Gitterstörungen weitgehend auszuheilen. Gitterumlagerungen sind in keinem Falle feststellbar gewesen. Die Röntgenuntersuchungen bestätigen also die von SIMON und MARCHAND1) auf Grund chemischer Untersuchungen gefundenen Erklärungen für die Aktivität der Gasreinigungsmasse.2. Die Eisenkomponente der Lautamasse ist weitgehend röntgenamorph, läßt aber auf Grund eines festgestellten Ferromagnetismus einen gewissen (geringen) Ordnungszustand vermuten. Keinesfalls liegt aber in der Lautamasse γ-Eisenhydroxyd3) oder ein anderes Hydroxyd4) vor. Man kann höchstens von einem röntgenamorphen, wasserhaltigen α-Oxyd sprechen.3. Röntgenographisch konnte festgestellt werden, daß für die Aktivität ein gewisser Grad von Gitterstörung mit verantwortlich ist. Präparate mit ungestörtem Gitter (wie Rotschlamm aus dem Bayer-Aufschluß) erweisen sich als inaktiv.

Die Oxydation des Eisen(III)-sulfids führt je nach den eingehaltenen Bedingungen und dem Wassergehalt entweder zu einem γ- oder α-Eisenhydroxyd.3. Bei der trockenen Gasreinigung mit anschließender Regeneration der eingesetzten Produkte entsteht in dem Maße, wie sie mit Schwefelwasserstoff reagieren, gittergestörtes α-Eisenhydroxyd. Dabei ist die Bildung des Hydroxydes unabhängig von der Gitterart des Ausgangsproduktes.4. Röntgenographisch konnte festgestellt werden, daß für die Aktivität ein gewisser Grad von Gitterstörungen mitverantwortlich gemacht werden kann. Präparate mit ungestörten Gittern erweisen sich als inaktiv.
