Notes: The compounds of formula Ln2[M(opba)]3·xH2O·yDMSO containing 4f LnIII and 3d MII ions have been synthesized; opba stands for ortho-phenylenebis(oxamato). These compounds crystallize poorly, and hence structural information has been obtained from the wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) technique. It has been shown that the compounds present the same ladder-like motif as that previously described for Tm2[Cu(opba)]3·4H2O·10DMF. Changing the LnIII and/or MII ions results in more or less pronounced distortions of the ladders. For a given MII ion, changing the LnIII ion from LaIII to LuIII results in a decrease of the Ln-M distance parallel to the lanthanide contraction. In the same way, for a given rare earth, changing the MII ion from CuII to NiII and ZnII ions also results in the decrease of the Ln-M distance in accord with the decreasing radii of the MII ions. The structural details have been analyzed and discussed.

Description: Caloric restriction has been shown to increase longevity in organisms ranging from yeast to mammals. In some organisms, this has been associated with a decreased fat mass and alterations in insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) pathways. To further explore these associations with enhanced longevity, we studied mice with a fat-specific insulin receptor knockout (FIRKO). These animals have reduced fat mass and are protected against age-related obesity and its subsequent metabolic abnormalities, although their food intake is normal. Both male and female FIRKO mice were found to have an increase in mean life-span of approximately 134 days (18%), with parallel increases in median and maximum life-spans. Thus, a reduction of fat mass without caloric restriction can be associated with increased longevity in mice, possibly through effects on insulin signaling.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bluher, Matthias -- Kahn, Barbara B -- Kahn, C Ronald -- DK 30136/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- DK 43051/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- DK 56116/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2003 Jan 24;299(5606):572-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Joslin Diabetes Center and Department of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA, 02215 USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12543978" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: An electric birefringence study was carried out on aqueous suspensions of the purple membrane of Halobacterium halobium. In addition to the characterization of both native and modified membrane samples, the dependence of electric birefringence on pH and ionic strength was also investigated. The results indicate that purple membrane shows electric birefringence at a field strength as low as 200 V/cm. The permanent dipole moment and polarizability ranged from 20,500 debyes and 1.01 × 10-14 cm3 for a purple membrane concentration of 0.40 mg/mL to 41,000 debyes and 2.05 × 10-14 cm3 for a concentration of 0.80 mg/mL. It was also found that removal of the retinyl group of bacteriorhodopsin substantially decreases but does not eliminate the electric birefringence of the membrane. The solubilization of the membrane by Triton X-100, however, completely abolishes the electric birefringence. These experiments indicate that there is an interaction between adjacent bacteriorhodopsin molecules within the purple membrane via the retinyl chromophore moiety that builds up the permanent dipole moment. They also suggest that there are two types of response when purple membrane suspensions are placed in an electric field. One is an alignment of the disk-shaped particles with the field. The other is a stacking of the particles following their alignment by the electric field, which is promoted by the induced dipole moment.

Notes: The dilithium salt of the 3a,4,7a,8-tetrahydro-4,4,8,8-tetra-methyl-4,8-disila-s-indacenediyl dianion (L2-, 2) was allowed to react with the solvated metal halides MX2 (M = Ni, Co, Cr) in the presence of the cyclopentadienyl (Cp) anion to give trans-CpMLMCp (3NiNi, 3CoCo, and 3CrCr) in yields up to 80%. The only cis isomers which could be detected were 4NiNi and 4CoCo. Similarly, the reaction of 2 with [CpVCl(PEt3)]2 gave the trans-vanadium analogue 3VV while the successive reaction of 2 with CrCl3 (THF)3 and PEt3 yielded the bridged half-sandwich (Et3P)Cl2CrLCrCl2(PEt3) (5CrCr). The mixed-metal dinuclear metallocene CpFel—NiCp (3FeNi) was synthesized from CpFel-, Cp- and solvated NiBr2. The molecules were characterized by mass spectrometry, elemental analyses, cyclic voltammetry, 1H—, 13C—, and 29Si—NMR spectroscopy and solid-state magnetic measurements. Cyclic voltammetry showed up to six electron transfers per molecule. A metal-dependent splitting of the half-wave potentials of up to 355 mV indicated rather strong electrostatic interaction between the metallocene units. The NMR results established unpaired spin on the ligands. Its distribution within the bridging ligand was correlated with the molecular orbital splitting and the magnetic interaction. Antiferromagnetic interaction was found for 3NiNi, 3CrCr, and 3VV with J = -11.6, -2.56, and -1.34 cm-1, respectively (H = -J · SA · SB). A temperature-dependent folding of the bridging ligand was deduced from the temperature behavior of the 1H—NMR signal shifts.

Notes: An automated collagen solubilizing apparatus that maintains constant electrolytic conditions during solubilization is described. It was used in solubilization of 6.95% of a calfskin corium as monomeric collagen in citrate buffer at pH 3.44 and ionic strength of 0.44 and a temperature of 8°C. It is shown that this is the limit of solubilization for undenatured collagen in this buffer.

Notes: A novel three-dimensional copper(II) compound of the formula [Cu3(btre)5(H2O)2](ClO4)6·H2O (btre = 1,2-bis(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)ethane) has been synthesized. The structure has been solved at 150 K by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The compound [C30H44Cu3N30O2·6(ClO4)·H2O] crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1bar with a = 12.488(1), b = 13.195(1), c = 19.756(2) Å, α = 78.959(8), β = 84.553(8), γ = 63.869(7)°, V = 2868.4(5) Å3, Z = 2 (trinuclear CuII units), 6484 reflections [I 〉 4σ(Ι)], RF = 0.0581, wR2 = 0.1214. The structure of this coordination polymer consists of a three-dimensional network built up from linear trinuclear CuII cations of formula [Cu3(btre)5(H2O)2]6+. This crystallographically independent unit comprises a linear array of three CuII ions linked by triple N1,N2-1,2,4-triazole bridges, yielding Cu1-Cu2 = 3.893(1) Å and Cu2-Cu3 = 3.889(1) Å. These linear trinuclear CuII units are linked by various pathways involving tridentate and tetradentate bridging btre ligands, which yields an unprecedented three-dimensional network. The CuII ions are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled with J = -1.01(2) cm-1 (based on the Hamiltonian: H = -J[SCu1·SCu2 + SCu2·SCu3] using the expression for the molar magnetic susceptibility S = 1/2 of a linear trinuclear system). The nature and the magnitude of the antiferromagnetic exchange have been discussed on the basis of the structural features.
