Notes: Polycyclotrimerization of a flexible aromatic dicyanate with a Schiff base structure was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The study on dynamic DSC evaluated an apparent activation energy (Ea) of 75.8 kJ/mol and autocatalytic first-order kinetics with rate expression Af(α) = 1.96 X 105 (1 + 4.39 α) (1 - α) min-1. The kinetic feature can be explained by a proposed mechanism consisting of hydroxyl-catalyzed and autocatalytic paths. The lower value of Ea compared with other aromatic dicyanates is due to the electron-withdrawing linkage of the inherent imine ( - CH=N) structure. The kinetic feature is affected by the content of the residual impurities (e.g., phenols or absorbed water) in the corresponding sample. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Abstract The controllability for switched linear systems with time-delay in controls is first investigated. The whole work contains three parts. This is the third part. The definition and determination of controllability of switched linear systems with multiple time-delay in control functions is mainly investigated. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the one-periodic, multiple-periodic controllability of periodic-type systems and controllability of aperiodic systems are presented, respectively. Finally, the case of distinct delays is discussed, it is shown that the controllability is independent of the size of delays.

Notes: Abstract The controllability for switched linear systems with time-delay in controls is first investigated. The whole work contains three parts. This is the second part. The definition and determination of controllability of switched linear systems with single time-delay in control functions is mainly investigated. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the oneperiodic, multiple-periodic controllability of periodic-type systems and controllability of periodic systems are presented, respectively.

Notes: The flow analysis network (FAN) method was modified to analyze the flow of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in a model counter-rotating nonintermeshing screw extruder. The numerical prediction of the pressure profiles was compared with the experimental results. Flow patterns in the screw elements of the model counter-rotating nonintermeshing twin screw extruder were also predicted. A new flow path method was developed to calculate the residence time distribution. This result will be applied to analyze the flow during the reaction in the model twin screw extruder.

Notes: Abstract The controllability for switched linear system with time-delay in controls was first investigated. The whole work contains three parts. This is the first part, including problem formulation and some preliminaries. Firstly, the mathematical model of switched linear systems with time-delay in control functions was presented. Secondly, the concept of column space, cyclic invariant subspace and generalized cyclic invariant subspace were introduced. And some basic properties, such as separation lemma, were presented. Finally, a basic lemma was given to reveal the relation between the solution set of a centain integral equations and the generalized cyclic invariant subspace. This lemma will play an important role in the determination of controllability. All these definitions and lemmas are necessary research tools for controllability analysis.

Notes: A universal method which can be used to generalize thin plate elements to thick ones without adding any extra degree of freedom (DOF) is presented in this paper. To illustrate this method, a rectangular moderately thick plate element with 12 DOF is constructed on the basis of the well known thin plate ACM element. The element can be used in the analysis of both thin and thick plates. Shear locking is avoided.

Notes: Fluid absorption studies have been made for a polyetherimide thermoplastic film and a unidirectional composite of the thermoplastic with graphite fibers immersed in water, JP4 jet fuel, ethylene glycol, and hydraulic fluid. The changes in the weight, thickness, and tensile properties were measured for the film. The changes in the flexural properties of the composite were measured for specimens whose fiber orientation was transverse to their length. Only the hydraulic fluid, which caused an erosion or dissolving of the resin at the specimen surface, affected the film's properties. Both the water and the hydraulic fluid affected the flexural properties of the composite, due to capillary absorption along the fiber-resin interface.

Notes: In our current work, we have examined the e-beam sensitivity and thermal processing behavior of pure PBOCST [poly(tert-butoxycarbonyloxystyrene)]. An alkali soluble latent image can be generated in the PBOCST by e-beam exposure followed by a post-exposure bake (PEB) at relatively high temperatures (140 to 150°C). Pattern wet development operates on the same basis as a PBOCST/acid generator two component system. Deprotection, accelerated by the exposure, yields alkali soluble areas, while unexposed areas remain insoluble. Sensitivities of 5 to 10°C/cm2 and contrasts of 6 to 10 have been measured. Complete TBOC deprotection results in a film thickness loss of 35 to 40% as CO2 and isobutene are evolved. A laser interferometer/hotplate setup was used to track film thickness with time during the thermal deprotection process. IR analysis confirmed the correlation between conversion and thickness. It was found that a slow initial conversion rate was followed an exponentially steep rise in rate after 50% conversion. Activation energies were on the order of 30 kcal/mol. It was concluded that thermolysis in both exposed and unexposed resist occurred during the PEB, but that the difference in extent of conversion on exposure was sufficient to generate a pattern.

Notes: The flow analysis network (FAN) method was modified to analyze the flow during polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in a model counter-rotating nonintermeshing screw extruder. The shear viscosity of the reactive mixture in the twin screw extruder was considered as a mixture of polymer and monomer. Thus, the reaction viscosity of the mixture of polymer and monomer was taken to be an explicit function dependent on the shear rate, temperature, conversion, and molecular weight. A new flow path method was developed to calculate the residence time distribution, which related to the degree of conversion. The numerical prediction of the velocity, temperature, viscosity, and pressure profiles during reaction in the model twin screw extruder is described.

Notes: A 12-DOF quadrilateral element for plate bending is formulated based on the concept of generalized compatibility and semi-Loof constraints. The element DOFs are defined with the conventional displacements at corner nodes and the semi-Loof constraints are used in the formulation. This element is a generalized conforming one which passes Irons' patch test and can be used to solve problems with complicated boundaries. When overall considerations of simplicity, accuracy and reliability are taken into account, this new element is one of the best 12-DOF quadrilateral plate-bending elements currently available.
