Notes: The polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) using the Ce(IV)-citric acid (CA) redox system as an initiator in aqueous nitric acid solution, in the presence of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), has been kinetically studied at a temperature range of 25-45°C. The rate of polymerization (Rp) and disappearance of Ce(IV) (-Rce) increase with increasing concentration of SDS, above its critical micelle concentration (cmc), when the surfactant molecules are organized. Rp was found to be proportional to [AN]1.5 and [CA]0.5. With other organic substrates, Rp follows the increasing order of sorbitol ≥ mannitol 〉 glycerol 〉 CA. But it was found to decrease considerably in the presence of cationic surfactant (CTAB), and nonionic surfactant (Triton-X-100) had no effect on the rate. -Rce varies linearly with [Ce(IV)] and [CA]. Both Rp and -Rce increase with increasing temperature. The overall activation energy was found to be 18.31 and 13.72 kcal/mol in the absence and presence of 0.015M SDS, respectively. The chain length of the polyacrylonitrile has also increased with increasing SDS concentration. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A number of resins were prepared by condensing m-aminoacetophenone with substituted aromatic compounds and formaldehyde in the presence of acids and bases as catalyst. The resins were characterized by infrared spectra. The solubility parameters were calculated from Small's group contribution which agreed well with the experimental value. The bacteriocidal properties of the resins have been studied.

Notes: The micellar effect on the kinetics of ceric ion-initiated polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of N-acetylglycine has been studied in the temperature range 30-50°C. The neutral emulsifier (Triton X-100) has no effect on the Rp, whereas both anionic (NaLS) and cationic (NCTAB) emulsifiers accelerate the rate of polymerization appreciably. Comparison of the effect of different organic substrates on the rate of polymerization has been made. Various effects such as the concentration of metal ion, surfactant, monomer, sulfuric acid, organic solvents, and inorganic salts on Rp have also been investigated. The most remarkable feature of the investigation involves the enhancement of Rp in the presence of micelles. A suitable mechanism for the derivation of the rate expression for the above system is proposed along with the calculation of activation energy and prediction of optimum conditions. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The reactivity ratios, thermal behavior, and the bacteriocidal properties of the resins prepared from substituted acetophenones, i.e., m-aminoacetophenone, o-hydroxyacetophenone, and m-hydroxyacetophenone, have been investigated. The results obtained from the bacteriocidal studies are found to be quite interesting. Some of the resins synthesized are potent bacteriocides. The simple Kelen - Tüdös linear graphical method was used to determine the order of reactivity of substituted acetophenones when they are copolymerized with halogen-substituted anilines, i.e., o-chloroaniline, m-chloroaniline, and p-chloroaniline. The resins are found to be thermally stable and the energy of activation have been evaluated from TG curve by applying the Freeman - Anderson and Broido methods.

Notes: The influence of N-acetylglycine on the kinetics of graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto chemically modified jute fibers was studied in the temperature range 40-60°C. The optimum conditions for grafting have been determined by studying the effects of concentrations of monomers, Ce(IV), and N-acetylglycine on the rate of grafting. Besides the effect of time, temperature, and concentration of the acid, the amount of jute fibers and some organic solvents and inorganic salts on the rate of grafting has been investigated. On the basis of experimental findings, a kinetic scheme has been proposed. Infrared spectra of chemically modified jute and grafted jute have been investigated. More than 185% graft yield could be achieved with the present system. Grafting has improved the thermal stability of jute fibers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Certain interstellar reactions have been studied through the graph-theoretic method using a Fortran-77 program. A plausible mechanism has been proposed for the reactions. The criterion of the conversion of edge to loop and vice versa proposed by the Bratislava group [Theor. Chim. Acta 79, 65 (1991)] has been given a reasonable chemical insight. In the reaction scheme the nucleophilic/electrophilic/carbene (singlet, triplet) or biradical loops have been generated by the fragmentation of reactant. Subsequently, Pearson's hard and soft acids bases (HSAB) theory and frontier orbital (FO) theory have been applied to explain the reaction mechanism. Few possible reactions of the interstellar and circumstellar molecules have been investigated with illustrations involving carbene intermediate and Woodward-Hoffmann rule. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Twenty-two cases of vascular graft failures (thrombosis, pseudoaneurysm, dilation, infection) were investigated by means of physicochemical, histological, and ultrastructural studies. A general decrease of mechanical resistance to stress of the prostheses was observed. Its magnitude ranged from 2 to 75% of the values of identical virgin prostheses and there was no relation with the duration of implantation. In addition to the breakage of yarn filaments (SEM), migration of fiber debris (histology) was observed in 7 cases. The structure of the polyester molecule had evolved after implantation. A decrease of crystallinity (x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry) was noted. These observations raise the question of the established stability of vascular prostheses and emphasize the need for further investigations in human graft retrieval programs.

Notes: Among 212 vascular prostheses collected in a cascular explant retrival programe, 50 exhibited one or more criteria of graft infection i.e., (a) clinical evidence of graft infection, (b) positive bacteriological analyses of the graft, and (c) presence at the blood-prosthetic interface of characterized microorganisms. Whereas each of these criteria was noted respectively in 25, 26, and 20 cases, there was no complete overlapping among the three criteria, but their combination led us to consider 50 cases of infected vascular grafts among the 212 collected. These results, and the occurrence in two cases among six investigations for viral infection, suggest that extensive bacteriological investigations of cascular explanted should be inculded in an implant retrieval program, and that infection may represent a high risk in graft failure.

Notes: Carbon-13 NMR spectral studies of tembamide (1) and aegeline (2), constituents of Fagara hyemalis and Aegle marmelos respectively, and a series of their structurally related amides (3-13) have been carried out. The assignment of the resonances of two related dimers are also reported. The assignment of the various resonances were made by considering the changes in chemical shifts produced by the change of substituents and also by using 1, 13 and a related compound as model compounds.
