Thermolysis of Spiro-norcaradienes. - Determination of Activation Parameters by N.M.R.Thermolysis of spiro-norcaradienes/spiro-cycloheptatrienes 12 ⇌ 13 is described. Aromatization in this reaction leads exclusively to the phenylcyclopentadiene derivatives 21a-h. In some cases [1,5]-sigmatropic shifts give rise to the formation of the isomeric phenylcyclopentadienes 23f-h and 24a, f-h. The activation parameters of the thermolysis reactions 12a-h ⇌ 13a-h are determined by n.m.r. The activation values are: EA = 19-31 kcal/mole, ΔG≠ = 25-31 kcal/mole, ΔH≠ = 18-30 kcal/mole. The spirenes 12 ⇌ 13 studied so far can be divided in two groups:a) the phenyl-substituted or benzo-fused spirenes 12a-e ⇌ 13a-e and b) the CI-substituted spirenes 12f-h ⇌ 13f-h. Based on solvent effects and the different activation parameters a radical mechanism is proposed for group a) spirenes and an ionic mechanism for group b) spirenes.
Notes:
