Notes: Abstract Three extracts were obtained from each of four host plants: sugars/glycosides; amino acids/bases; and organic acids. The four hosts studied were balsam fir, black spruce, red spruce, and white spuce. The effects of recombined host plant extracts on the feeding behaviour of eastern spruce budworm larvae were examined in two-choice tests. Results compare feeding preferences as well as feeding rates between combinations of extracts. The importance of each class of polar compounds is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A two-choice, wind-tunnel olfactometer was designed and contructed to determine whether second-instar eastern spruce budworm larvae,Christoneura fumiferana (Clem.), could detect and discriminate among host-plant volatiles. Volatiles of current year's growth ofPicea glauca were preferred over those ofP. rubens, P. mariana, or air.Abies balsamea was preferred overP. mariana or air.P. rubens andP. mariana were both preferred over air. Two-year-old growth ofP. glauca, A. balsamea, P. rubens, andP. mariana were all preferred over air. Current year's growth of these host evergreen species was usually preferred over former year's growth of the same species in each case.

Notes: Abstract Feeding preferences to extracts from three host plants were determined for sixth-instar eastern spruce budworm larvae reared on one of three hosts or on artificial diet. Preferences of foliage-reared larvae were compared to those of diet-reared, or naive, larvae. No effect of plant induction was found using amino acids and bases and chloroform extracts on test disks in three-choice experiments. Possible effects of habituation for sugars and glycosides from white spruce were shown. Organic acids contributed to a phenomenon of avoidance learning in larvae reared on all three hosts, showing that this fraction from balsam fir was the least deterrent, while that from black spruce was the most deterrent.

Notes: Strong multiple complexation of transition metal ions, Cu(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) with different generations of well-defined poly(propylene imine) dendrimers as multi(tridentate) ligands has been used to construct nanoscopic assemblies of defined structure and size incorporating a distinct number of metal ions from 2 up to 32.

Notes: Abstract The feeding preferences and feeding rates of eastern spruce budworm on extracts from mature foliage normally avoided by larvae indicate that the chemical composition of four major host plants does not account for this avoidance. Other factors such as the degree of lignification and/or moisture content of the older foliage may play a more important role. Of 14 amino acids tested, alanine, lysine, proline, and serine stimulated feeding. The interactions of amino acids and sucrose were studied, and the results are discussed in relation to feeding preferences and feeding rates.

Notes: Thermal and microwave-induced free-radical non-aqueous dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of poly(styrene)-block-poly(ethene-alt-propene) dispersing agent were compared. For controlled polymerization in the microwave field, a new microwave polymerization reactor was built to afford uniform heating and to control temperature via microwave power variation. At identical MMA concentration and polymerization temperature of 70°C no special effect of the microwave field on conversions, molecular weights and particle sizes of PMMA was detected with respect to conventional thermal free radical dispersion polymerization.

Notes: A novel class of liquid rubber comprises bis(4-hydroxybenzoate)-terminated poly(tetrahydrofuran), which reacts with bisphenol A diglycidyl ether to form segmented liquid rubbers with poly(tetrahydrofuran) and poly(hydroxyether) segments. In anhydride-cured epoxy resins such segmented liquid rubbers afford improved toughness. Diol- and bis(hydroxybenzoate)-terminated poly(tetrahydrofuran)-based liquid rubbers are compared. It is possible to control the polymer morphology by the variation of the molecular architecture of segmented poly(tetrahydrofuran)-based liquid rubbers. The average size of the dispersed rubber phases depends on the molecular weight of the segmented liquid rubbers and correlates with impact strength and stiffness.

Notes: The structure formation via spinodal decomposition is monitored by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle light scattering (SALS) using hexahydrophthalic anhydride cured bisphenol A diglycidyl ether mixed with bis(4-hydroxybenzoate)-terminated poly(tetrahydrofuran) segmented poly(hydroxyether). The poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) segment has a number average molecular weight of 4500 g/mol. There is good agreement between the particle - particle spacing obtained from the maximum of SALS traces and the digital image analysis of TEM micrographs. Time-resolved SALS measurements are used to study the phase separation kinetics in the epoxy/diol-terminated PTHF system.

Notes: The decomposition products of emulsion explosives and of other composite explosives containing ammonium nitrate, such as ANFO, were investigated. The compounds were thermolyzed at high temperature and pressure on the microsecond and millisecond time scales by adiabatic gas compression. It was found that the first step in emulsion decomposition is pyrolysis of the oil to form reactive intermediates like Hċ and CH3ċ. These reactive species are oxidized by the decomposition products of ammonium nitrate in a later sequence of reaction steps.
