Notes: The batch pressure-response cell provides flexible and accurate means of assessing the kinetics in heterogeneous gas-liquid reactions. A new model is derived to determine the kinetics of reactions of general (n,m) order using binary gas phase. This model has an important feature that allows the determination of the reaction order with respect to the gas-phase reactant and the rate constant from a single set of pressure vs. time data through a simple two-parameter estimation routine. Gas mixing was introduced via a simple modification of the liquid-phase magnetic stirrer to reduce the gas-phase mass-transfer resistance to negligible levels and the parameter estimation problem to only two factors. The heterogeneous cobalt catalyzed sulfite oxidation reaction at low partial pressures of oxygen using a nitrogen-oxygen mixture was tested to verify the validity of the model. The predicted kinetics were remarkably close to those values in the literature, yielding an oxygen order of 1.98 ± 0.02, which is taken to be second order in oxygen.

Notes: Liquid circulation in bubble columns influences many system properties such as mass transfer and catalyst dispersion. Conditions favorable for liquid circulation often exist only for highly turbulent slurries. Experiments under conditions of lowered surface tension proved conclusively that uniform circulation can exist even in the bubbly-flow regime. Moreover, the measured circulating velocity profile is more plug-shaped in the center core than traditional models, which take a parabolic shape. These observations led to the application of a circulation theory based on an energy-dissipation model for turbulent eddy viscosity, which can be easily computed as a simple function of superficial-gas velocity. Two length scales were used in model calculations depending on flow regime: bubble diameter for bubbly flow and column diameter for churn turbulence. The liquid-velocity profile contained a tuned dimensionless proportionality constant, which resulted in two different average values, k = 2.51 for bubbly flow and 0.0242 for churn turbulence, when tuned to experimental data. The integral average eddy viscosity is numerically equivalent to the eddy dispersion coefficient for bubbly flow. Predicted liquid velocity compared very favorably with new measured values under conditions of low surface tension and with literature values.

Notes: Quantitative theories based on first principles are derived to explain the roles of heat and mass transfer in the attainment of steady state or ultimate separation in closed direct-thermal-mode parametric pumps. The theoretical results are in agreement with applicable experimental data, including the experimental anomaly called reversed separation. Under conditions when the axial dispersion is much greater than molecular diffusion, the theory predicts and experiments confirm that 1/ln(α∞) varies in a linear way with fluid displacement at constant frequency. An additional asymptotic result suggests that when Sh » PeM, there is a simple linear connection between 1/ln(α∞) and PeM which is supported by experimental data.

Notes: A comparison was made of the equilibrium mixing/segregation behavior of binary mixtures of different-sized, equal-density glass beads in two- and three-dimensional fluidized beds. Several empirical equations for mixing index were examined, all involving a dimensionless function of excess gas velocity. This function, which appeared to largely account for the effect of aspect ratio, was found to optimally correlate the data for both types of beds. However, a much better fit was obtained for the threedimensional bed data, most probably because wall effects significantly retarded mixing in the two-dimensional bed.
