Notes: Several series of multifunctional silicon-containing epoxide monomers and oligomers have been prepared using rhodium catalyzed hydrosilation reactions. Dialkyl and diarylsilanes can be condensed with vinyl epoxides to give high yields of the desired diepoxides while the hydrosilation of alkyl and aryl silanes yields a mixture of di and tri epoxy substituted products. The condensation of αω,—Si—H difunctional compounds with vinyl epoxides can be carried out regioselectively to give α-hydrogen-ω-epoxy intermediates, which can be further reacted with di and tri olefins bearing terminal double bonds to give a series of well characterized epoxy functional oligomers. An investigation of the photoinitiated cationic polymerization of the monomers and oligomers, which were prepared during the course of these studies, was carried out. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The metabolism of 17α-methyl-17β-hydroxy-2-oxa-5α-androstan-3-one (oxandrolone) in man has been investigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. After oral administration of a 10 mg dose to man, five metabolites were detected in the free fraction of the urinary samples. Oxandrolone, the major compound excreted in urine, was detected within 72 h after administration. During this period 35.8 and 8.4% of the administered dose was excreted as unchanged oxandrolone and 17-epioxandrolone, respectively. In addition, minute amounts of 16α- and 16β- hydroxyoxandrolone and a δ-hydroxy acid resulting from the hydrolysis of the lactone group of oxandrolone were detected in the urine samples 8-60 h after administration. Furthermore, the susceptibility of oxandrolone to hydrolysis was investigated under several pH conditions. Extraction and fractionation of steroidal metabolites was achieved by using C18 and silica Sep Pak™ chromatography. The mass spectra of the metabolites are presented and major fragmentation pathways discussed.

Notes: The hydrosilation of α,ω-dihydrogen functional oligopolydimethylsiloxanes with epoxy compounds containing vinyl groups has been found to take place regioselectively in such a manner that compounds can be isolated in high yields in which only one Si—H group has been reacted. Three different α,ω-dihydrogen functional oligopolydimethysiloxanes with different chain lengths were monohydrosilated and the resulting epoxide monomers characterized. The rate of hydrosilation at the first Si—H functional group has been shown to be considerably faster than at the second site and from these kinetic studies, activation energies for each hydrosilation step were calculated. Mechanisms are considered which offer an explantion for these observations. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Using rhodium and platinum catalyzed regioselective hydrosilation, a series of α-hydrogen-ω-epoxy silane and siloxane compounds have been prepared in good yields. These intermediates have been further condensed with vinyltrimethoxysilane in subsequent hydrosilation reactions to prepare an interesting new class of ambifunctional monomers containing both epoxy and trimethoxysilane groups. It was further shown that these same compounds could be synthesized by a simplified “one-pot” two-step procedure. An investigation of the simultaneous cationic ring-opening polymerization of the epoxy groups and the acid-catalyzed condensation of the trimethoxysilyl groups was carried out. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Silicon-containing epoxide compounds bearing Si — H groups can be readily prepared in high yields by the regioselective rhodium-catalyzed monohydrosilation of α,ω-dihydrogen functional siloxanes and silanes with vinyl epoxides. The remaining Si — H groups in these compounds can be further selectively hydrosilated with unsaturated epoxides to give a series of unique ambifunctional monomers containing two different epoxide groups in the same molecule. The photopolymerization of these monomers has been studied using analytical techniques including real time infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning photocalorimetry. On photopolymerization, the new monomers yield interesting networks. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The discovery that the rhodium-catalyzed hydrosilation of unsaturated epoxides with compounds containing two Si—H functional groups proceeds in a discrete, stepwise fashion, has made possible the synthesis of a series of interesting compounds containing both Si—H and epoxy groups in the same molecule. These compounds can be used both as an interesting new class of epoxy monomers as well as intermediates for the preparation of a wide variety of novel monomers which incorporate epoxide as well as other types of polymerizable functional groups © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The phase behavior of a hybrid polymer network (HPN) composed of poly[(propylene glycol maleate)-co-(propylene glycol phthalate)] crosslinked with styrene and polyester-urethane crosslinked with methylene-bis-ortho-chloroaniline was examined. The correlation between phase separation and impact strength of the HPNs is discussed. The composition of HPNs has an effect on their properties.

Notes: The polyacrylic acid derivative, the copolymer (PABAM) of acrylic acid (AA) and p-benzoic acid acrylamide (BAM) were prepared by polymeric reaction. The coordinate structure of the polymer-Eu3+ complexes was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The fluorescence intensity of the PABAM-Eu3+ complex was enhanced because of introduction of a BAM unit in the polyacrylic acid and reached a maximum when the mole ratio of AA to BAM was about 1 : 1.The ternary complexes of Eu3+-polymer-1,10-phenanthroline (PRL), or 2,2-bipyridine (BPD) were synthesized. The polymers used were PABAM and polyacrylic acid (PAA). The fluorescence intensity of the polymer-Eu3+ complexes was increased by 5∼21 times owing to the introduction of PRL and BPD.

Notes: The rapid, efficient electron beam-induced cationic polymerization of multifunctional epoxy monomers has been carried out in the presence of diaryliodonium and triarylsulfonium salts. These polymerizations take place at low doses (1-3 Mrad), which make them attractive for commercial applications. The factors that contribute to the high reactivity of these monomers are discussed.

Notes: Poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) with uniform composition was synthesized from acrylic acid and acrylamide by azeotropic copolymerization. The fluorescent properties of the copolymer-Eu3+ or -Tb3+ complexes were investigated. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of the complexes is dependent on the composition of the copolymer. Fluorescence lifetime measurement indicates that Eu3+ or Tb3+ exists in the complexes in at least two coordination forms, and the difference of the nature or relative quantity of the coordination forms varies with the composition of the copolymer. The fluorescence lifetime of Eu3+ or Tb3+ in the complexes is also dependent on the composition of the copolymer. It was also found that intramacromolecular hybrid coordination of oxygen containing and nitrogen containing coordination groups makes Eu3+ or Tb3+ fluoresce more strongly than intermacromolecular hybrid coordination of the two types of coordination groups does.
