Notes: Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) without addition of lipids were deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) conductive electrodes. A sandwich photocell with a juction structure of ITO/bR/electrolyte/ITO has been constructed in which the bR LB film was put into contact directly with an aqueous electrolyte immobilized in an agar gel. Under visible light irradiation a transient photocurrent due to a change in light intensity can be observedl showing the property of vision-imitative material. It can be used as a multiple optical switch, since it gives positive and negative transient photocurrnts during application and removal of light irradiation respectively and has a photoresponse repeatedly in the same direction when the light intensity increases or decreases stepwise. A photoalarm consisting of the bR photocell and an amplifier was set up by utilizing the switching function of the bR LB film.

Notes: The poly(tetra peptide), H- (L·Val1-L·Pro2-Gly3-Gly4)n-L·Val-OMe, which is a recurring sequence in tropoelastin the precursor protein of the elastic fiber, has been irradiation crosslinked to produce an elastomeric material with limited strength. When a material such as a Dacron fabric is impregnated by the coacervate phase of the poly(tetra peptide) prior to irradiation crosslinking at 50 Mrad, the crosslinked product exhibits stress-strain curves with good elastomeric properties and high strength. In addition to the stress-strain curves, the material is characterized by scanning electron microscopy.

Notes: Calcification is the principal cause of the clinical failures of the bioprosthetic heart valves fabricated from glutaraldehyde pretreated porcine aortic valves or bovine pericardium. In this paper, we compared the calcification on various types of bovine pericardiums pretreated with two hydrophilic epoxy compounds adding GA post-treatment (EP 1 and EP 2), glutaraldehyde (GA)- and nontreated pericardium (Fresh), respectively, by in vitro and in vivo tests. Significant decrease of calcification was found by pretreatment with both epoxy compounds rather than with glutaraldehyde : 0.250 ± 0.001 (Fresh), 0.276 ± 0.058 (EP l), 0.302 ± 0.071 (EP 2), and 0.478 ± 0.172 (GA) μg (Ca)/mg (dried tissue), respectively, after 20 days dipping in a simulating serum solution in vitro; 115.13 ± 60.11 (Fresh), 129.84 ± 51.08 (EP 1), 167.39 ± 20.81 (EP 2), and 205.19 ± 16.86 (GA) pg/mg, respectively, after 3 months subcutaneous implantation i n rabbits. The in uifro method for evaluating calcification designed by us gave the similar order among four samples with that obtained by in uiuo test. Because the bovine pericardium pretreated with the epoxy compounds adding GA post treatment possesses the greater tenacity than that pretreated only with epoxy compounds or GA, meanwhile the calcification is also significantly decreased with this pretreatment, it may be expected that the bovine pericardium with this pretreatment will have the greater anticalcification and durability in dynamic stress. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Recently, the close relation between oxidized low density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) and the progression of glomerular injury has been demonstrated. The nitric oxide (NO) pathway in glomerular mesangial cells may be a potential target for the adverse effects of Ox-LDL in the development of glomerular injury. In this study, we treated cultured rat mesangial cells (RMC) with Fe2+-oxidized LDL and then stimulated the cells with lipopolysacharride (LPS, 10 μg ml-1). The LPS-induced NO production, assessed by NO2- concentrations in cultured supernatants, decreased from 7·83 nmol per 106 cells in control to 4·00 nmol per 106 cells and 1·67 nmol per 106 cells in RMC preincubated with Ox-LDL at 20 μg ml-1 and 40 μg ml-1, respectively (P〈0·01). Native LDL had no significant effects on LPS-induced NO production. Using the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique, we could not detect significant alteration of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) mRNA levels in RMC preincubated with Ox-LDL. Our results suggest that Ox-LDL decreases induced NO production in RMC, which may contribute to the adverse effects of Ox-LDL in progressive glomerular injury. The mechanisms of this decrease may not involve changes of iNOS genic transcription. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Description: The planning of alternative routes for the synthesis of complex organic molecules has been facilitated by the formulation of guiding strategies that can be applied to a broad range of problems. Analysis of organic synthesis can be carried out in the retrosynthetic direction, opposite to the actual process of chemical synthesis, or bidirectionally, that is, as a combined retrosynthetic and synthetic search. An interactive computer program is described which utilizes the general strategies of retrosynthetic analysis and an appropriate database to generate pathways of chemical intermediates for chemical synthesis of a particular target structure. Computer graphics and standard chemical structures are used for man-machine communication.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Corey, E J -- Long, A K -- Rubenstein, S D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1985 Apr 26;228(4698):408-18.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3838594" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The next generation of high-performance batteries should include alternative chemistries that are inherently safer to operate than nonaqueous lithium-based batteries. Aqueous zinc-based batteries can answer that challenge because monolithic zinc sponge anodes can be cycled in nickel–zinc alkaline cells hundreds to thousands of times without undergoing passivation or macroscale dendrite formation. We demonstrate that the three-dimensional (3D) zinc form-factor elevates the performance of nickel–zinc alkaline cells in three fields of use: (i) 〉90% theoretical depth of discharge (DOD Zn ) in primary (single-use) cells, (ii) 〉100 high-rate cycles at 40% DOD Zn at lithium-ion–commensurate specific energy, and (iii) the tens of thousands of power-demanding duty cycles required for start-stop microhybrid vehicles.
