Notizen: Abstract Since 1973 the Geological Survey of Canada has been making estimates of the petroleum resources for Canadian sedimentary basins. The purpose of this activity has been to provide a systematic approach to making an inventory of petroleum resources for departmental planning purposes. The resource evaluation was processed by the Hydrocarbon Assessment System Processor (HASP), devised by the Geological Survey of Canada. Since then, demands on the evaluation capability have increased and at the same time evaluation data have been increasingly applied to economic analyses. HASP can no longer be adapted to handle the new challenges. This study contains a probabilistic formulation for HASP and establishes a framework from which the following may be calculated: (1)distribution of number of pools; (2)expected rth largest pool size and its distribution; and (3)generation of reservoir parameters for a given pool size. Play 10 from the East Coast of Canada was used as an example to illustrate the applications of the analytical approach presented. This paper demonstrates that the analytical approach has more to offer than HASP.

Notizen: Abstract Conditional analysis is an essential component for evaluation of petroleum resources. Such analysis attempts to answer the questions: for the input data and a given play potential, what is the most likely number of pools and their sizes? An example is provided to illustrate the usage and application of this conditional method of analysis. This example demonstrates that the method can be used as a feedback mechanism to challenge the underlying geological concepts of the play; and to yield more certain predictions if additional information is given. Consequently, the method will enhance the reliability of the estimates of petroleum resources.

Notizen: An automated collagen solubilizing apparatus that maintains constant electrolytic conditions during solubilization is described. It was used in solubilization of 6.95% of a calfskin corium as monomeric collagen in citrate buffer at pH 3.44 and ionic strength of 0.44 and a temperature of 8°C. It is shown that this is the limit of solubilization for undenatured collagen in this buffer.

Notizen: Many changes that occur in a cell during the cell cycle can be demonstrated in synchronous cultures and can reveal dimensions of cell metabolism not attainable by the study of balanced growth of asynchronous populations in batch cultures or the steady state in chemostat cultures. The release of 14CO2 from specifically labeled glucose by phased (continuously synchronized) cultures follows a characteristic pattern (profile) that depends upon the stage in the cell cycle and the period of labeling used. Successive profiles throughout a cycle showed differences that were altered under different nutrient-limiting growth conditions. Profiles obtained with glucose-1-14C, glucose-2-14C, glucose-3,4-14C, and glucose-6-14C and phased cells of Candida utilis under N-, P-, and C-limited growth demonstrated the variable character of the metabolic activity that occurred in the cells while contour changes within the profiles across the cycle indicated possible correlations with activities of the hexose monophosphate, Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas, and tricarboxylic acid cycle pathways during the cell cycle. The basis of these changes and their use as elementary parameters for study of problems of physiological changes in vivo are considered.

Notizen: Polyurethanes (PU) with suitable soft segments have been found to be good blood-compatible polymers and have attracted much attention recently. In this study, various molar amounts of 4,4′-methylene bisphenyl isocyanate reacted with poly(tetramethylene oxide) were synthesized to explore the optimal ratio of hard/soft segments for cell attachment and proliferation in in vitro systems. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis were used to determine the physical properties, hydrogen bonding index (HBI) and transmission electron microscopy to observe the phase-separation phenomena in the materials, and 3T3 fibroblast to evaluate the dependence of the cell proliferation at 37°C on the material properties. Our results show that cell attachment and proliferation are closely related to the cell growth surface, which in turn is controlled by (1) the ratio of hard to total segment concentration and (2) the recrystallization temperature (Tc) of PU. To obtain a good cell growth surface, the ratio of hard to total segment concentration is found to be between 0.4 and 0.6, and HBI is between 1.5 and 2.1. Furthermore, when the Tc of PU is near the physiology temperature, a stable surface for cell growth can be provided. The shorter molecules in the soft segment region can rearrange the molecular chain at 37°C.
