    Description: The effects of preservatives like fat coated sorbic acid (FCSA) and glucono-deltalactone (D-lactone), both separately and in combination, on the shelf life of high temperature (115.6°C for 20 min) processed fish sausage, stored at three different temperatures namely, ambient (28±2° C), cooler storage (2±2°C) and refrigerator (10±2° C) were studied. Whereas the control (without preservative), FCSA, D-lactone and FCSA + D-lactone treated samples could be stored for 9, 11 and 13 days respectively at ambient temperature, those stored at lower temperatures were found to be in acceptable condition for 70 and 80 days respectively. Organoleptic evaluation of taste, flavour the products carried out by panelists revealed that FCSA and FCSA + D-lactone treated samples were unacceptable with regard to the taste, flavour and texture. However, the taste flavour and texture of the control and D-lactone treated samples were in acceptable condition.

    Notes: The aggregation behavior of the chemotactic peptide analogs, Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe-OMe (1) and Formyl-Met-Aib-Phe-OMe (2), has been studied in chloroform and dimethylsulfoxide over the concentration range of 0.2-110 mM by 1H-nmr spectroscopy. Both peptides associate in CDCl3 at concentrations ≥ 2 mM, while there is no evidence for aggregation in (CD3)2SO. Analog 1 adopts an extended conformation in both solvents favoring association to form β-sheet structures. A folded, γ-turn conformation involving a 3 → 1 hydrogen bond between Met CO and Phe NH is supported by 1H-, 13C-nmr, and ir studies of analog 2. The influence of backbone conformation on the ease of peptide aggregation is demonstrated by ir studies in CHCl3 and CD studies in dioxane.

    Notes: Several amino terminal fragments of the emerimicins (Ac-Phe1-Aib2-Aib3-Aib4-Val5-Gly6-Leu7-Aib8-Aib9-Hyp10-Gln11-D-Iva12-Hyp13-Ala/Aib14-Phol15) ranging in length from five to ten residues have been synthesized. Nuclear magnetic resonance studies have been carried out on the 1-5, 6-10, 1-6, 1-7, 1-8, 1-9, and 1-10 fragments. The number of solvent-shielded NH groups in CDCl3 solutions for 1-5, 1-6, 1-7, 1-8, 1-9, and 1-10 indicate that 310-helical structures are favored in this solvent. In (CD3)2SO, an additional NH group, assigned to Aib(3) NH is solvent exposed in the fragments longer than six residues, suggesting partial unfolding of the N-terminal β-turn or transition to an α-helical conformation. The data for fragment 6-10 are consistent with a conformation having a single Leu-Aib β-turn. Infrared studies suggest an increase in the number of intramolecular hydrogen bonds with increasing peptide chain length. Appreciable mitochondrial uncoupling activity is observed for peptides with a chain length of at least seven residues. The order of efficiencies of the fragments is 1-7 〈 1-8 ∼ 1-10 〈 1-9, with the decapeptide exhibiting anomalously low uncoupling activity.

    Description / Table of Contents: Es wurden Polyester basierend auf 1,4,5,6,7,7-Hexachlor-5-norbornen-2,3-dicarbonällureanhydrid (I), Tetrachlorphthalsäureanhydrid (II), Dibromneopentylglykol (II), ein Polyesterblend (V) bestehend aus dem Polyester (III) und einem Polyester (IV) für allgemeine Zwecke, ein Polyester (VI) basierend auf 1,4,5,6,7,7-Hexachlor-5-norbornen-2,3-dicarbonsäureanhydrid und dem Polyester III und ein Polyesterblend (VII) bestehend aus den Polyestern I und III hergestellt. Ihre chemische Resistenz und ihre Feuchtigkeitsaufnahme bei Temperaturen von 25 und 65°C wurden in Säuren, 20% NaOH und Wasser untersucht. Hierbei wurde gefunden, daß der Polyester (III) von den Säuren am wenigsten angegriffen wird. Verglichen mit unbehandelten Poly meren fand bei beiden Temperaturen in 20% NaOH eine Gewichtsabnahme bei allen Polyestern statt, mit Ausnahme des Polyesters VII. Erne Gewichtszunahme aller Polyester wurde beobachtet durch Feuchtigkeitsaufnahme sowohl bei 25 als auch bei 65°C, wobei die Zunahme bei der höheren Temperatur größer war. Der Polyester III zeigte die geringste Feuchtigkeitsaufnahme.
    Notes: Chlorendic anhydride based polyester (I,) tetrachlorophthalic anhydride based polyester (II), dibromoneopentyl glycol based polyester (III,) general purpose polyester (IV,) blend of dibromoneopentyl glycol based polyester with general purpose polyester (V,) chlorendic anhydride and dibromoneopentyl glycol based polyester (VI), and a blend of chlorendic anhydride based polyester and dibromoneopentyl glycol based polyester (VII) were prepared and their chemical resistance and moisture absorption studied in various reagents, acid, alkali, and water, at 25 and 65°C. It is found that the polyester (III) is the least affected in the presence of the acids. In 20% NaOH, there was a decrease in weight for all polyesters at both the temperatures compared to the control except the polyester (VII). Increase in weight of all the polyesters was observed during the absorption of moisture both at 25 and 65°C. The increase was higher at higher temperature. Polyester (III) thus shows the least absorption of moisture.

    Description / Table of Contents: Polystyrol (PS) wurde mit gepfropftem thermomechanischem Zitterpappel- und Birkenzellstoff verstärkt bzw. gefüllt. Die Abhängigkeit der Zugfestigkeitseigenschaften der Verbundstoffe von verschiedenen Gehalten an Füllstoff, vom Polymergehalt der gepfropften Faser, von der Anwesenheit von Homopolymerem in der gepfropften Faser und von der Imprägnierung der Fasern mit PS wurde untersucht. PS, das mit gepfropftem Zitterpappel- und Birkenzellstoff gefüllt war, zeigte eine deutliche Verbesserung der Zugfestigkeit und des Spannungswertes. Die Bruchenergie und die Dehnung der Verbundstoffe nahm mit Zunahme der Konzentration an Füllstoff ab.
    Notes: Polystyrene (PS) was reinforced/filled with grafted thermomechanical pulp (TMP) of aspen and birch. The dependence of tensile properties of composites on different loadings of filler, on polymer loading in grafted fiber, on the presence of homopolymer in grafted fiber, and on impregnation of fibers with PS were studied. PS filled with grafted aspen and birch (lower polymer loading) showed a significant increase in tensile strength and modulus. Fracture energy and elongation of the composites decreased with an increase in the concentration of filler.

    Description / Table of Contents: Holzfasern wurden mit Silanen mit verschiedenen funktionellen Gruppen, wie Vinyl-, Acryl-und Aminogruppen, vorbehandelt und als Füllstoff für Polyethylen hoher Dichte bis zu einem Füllstoffgehalt von 40 Gew.-% verwendet. Die Wirkung der Silanvorbehandlung auf die Adhäsion zwischen Matrix und Faser und auf die Faserverteilung in den Verbundwerkstoffen wurde untersucht und die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Matrix und Faser dabei IR-spektroskopisch charakterisiert. Der Einfluß von Silankonzentration, Füllstoffgehalt und Natur der verwendeten Holzfaser auf mechanische Eigenschaften der Faserverbundwerkstoffe, wie Zugfestigkeit und Kerbschlagzähigkeit, wurde ebenfalls ermittelt.
    Notes: Silanes with different functional groups (vinyl, acryl and amino) were used to pretreat the wood fiber. Composites were made with high density polyethylene (HDPE) and silane pretreated wood fibers at various filler levels (0 to 40 wt.-%). The effects of silane treatment on fiber-matrix adhesion and fiber dispersion were studied. The characterization of fiber-matrix interaction was done by IR. The influence of silane concentration, filler content and the nature of wood fiber on mechanical properties (tensile and impact strength) of the composites were examined.

    Notes: The conformation of the acyclic biscystine peptide S,S′-bis(Boc-Cys-Ala-OMe) has been studied in the solid state by x-ray diffraction, and in solution by1H- and13C-nmr, ir, and CD methods. The peptide molecule has a twofold rotation symmetry and adopts an intramolecular antiparallel β-sheet structure in the solid state. The two antiparallel extended strands are stabilized by two hydrogen bonds between the Boc CO and Ala NH groups [N⃛O 2.964 (3) Å, O⃛HN 2.11 (3) Å, and NH⃛O angle 162 (3)°]. The disulfide bridge has a right-handed conformation with the torsion angle CβSSCβ = 95.8 (2)°. In solution the presence of a twofold rotation symmetry in the molecule is evident from the1H- and13C-nmr spectra. 1H-nmr studies, using solvent and temperature dependencies of NH chemical shifts, paramagnetic radical induced line broadening, and rate of deuterium-hydrogen exchange effects on NH resonances, suggest that Ala NH is solvent shielded and intramolecularly hydrogen bonded in CDCl3 and in (CD3)2SO. Nuclear Overhauser effects observed between Cys CαH and Ala NH protons and ir studies provide evidence of the occurrence of antiparallel β-sheet structure in these solvents. The CD spectra of the peptide in organic solvents are characteristic of those observed for cystine peptides that have been shown to adopt antiparallel β-sheet structures.

    Notes: 4-Benzylidene-5-oxazolones 5 do not react with P(OMe)3; with P(NMe2)3 they give rise to 4-α-[bis(dimethylamino)phosphoryl]benzyl-5-dimethylaminooxazoles 6. This behavior differs from that of the corresponding pyrazolones and isoxazolones and is attributed to a decreased stability of the dipolar adduct resulting from a β attack of phosphorus.
