Notes:
The mass spectra of catechol polymethylene diether homologs have been determined and the formation of unexpected fragment ions is reported. The size of the aliphatic ring significantly influences the relative intensity of the various ions produced. Possible mechanisms involving a ring contraction process are suggested to explain the formation of one of the common ion fragments (a) in the homologous series. Deuterium labeling experiments indicate that fragment ion a is formed by participation of the α carbons, but extensive isotope scrambling prevents the establishment of a concrete mechanism for the formation of the common catechol ion fragment (m/e 110).
