Notes:
Wide-angle X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, density, stress-strain, and dynamic viscoelastic measurements have been applied to a row-crystallized ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer film prepared by extrusion from the melt under extension to investigate the deformation mechanism upon stretching. It is shown that the deformation below the temperature of the phase transition (the order-disorder transition from the crystal phase to the mesophase) (Th) is somewhat like that of “hard” elastic materials which is associated with micro-void formation, and that the deformation above Th is rubber-like, associated with bending of the lamellae. Gas permeability measurements have also been used for the stretched films to investigate the supermolecular structure, and the results support the above description.
